The Israeli government has made its intentions clear. Starting in July they plan to unilaterally annex large swathes of the illegally occupied West Bank, declaring the territory an integral part of Israel proper. Annexation, illegal under international law, is the forcible and unilateral acquisition of territory over which it has no recognised sovereignty and to make it an integral part of the state – in this case, Israel.
This act would be the culmination of years of land theft, displacement of Palestinians, and illegal settlement of occupied Palestinian land.
While solidifying its grip on Palestinian land, Israel will continue to ramp up its system of institutionalised racist discrimination against the Palestinian people as a whole, whether under occupation, as second-class citizens in Israel, or in exile, treatment that amounts to the crime of apartheid under international law. In this vein, the Israeli government have already announced they will not grant Palestinians in annexed areas citizenship rights.
The international community has a duty to respond to such egregious violations of international law. Palestinian civil society has called for “effective action” by nation-states to stop annexation. This means applying international law on trade with illegal Israeli settlements, and enacting sanctions, including by placing a two-arms embargo on Israel.
Stand up on July 4th and call on the UK government to implement sanctions immediately to halt annexation.
Join us in Nottingham Market Square to demonstrate by holding signs with the slogans Stop Annexation, Sanctions Now and End Apartheid.
