On March 20, 1969, the longest student strike in US history ended with the victorious creation of the College of Ethnic Studies. Led by the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF), students demanded the decolonization of Eurocentric curriculum, university accountability and transparency, and a school of Third World Studies. Today, a perennial Zionist, right-wing and white supremacist campaign is threatening to recolonize California Ethnic Studies Curriculum, silence Palestine, police and suppress campus activism, and privatize our public education.

In this first of 2021 AMED Virtual Open Classrooms, students will meet face-to-face with the legendary leaders who inspired The Spirit of ‘68 as they share oral histories and respond to some of the questions on our minds:

How did students come together and what were the factors that allowed them to stay resolute in their struggle?
What challenges did they confront as they faced off a hostile administration, the Governor of California, SF Police, the National Guard, and the FBI?
Who had their back and what did students sustain their solidarities?
What lessons can we draw for today’s renewed battle for the (just) soul of our campuses and public education in the context of the pandemic and corporatization?
