May 15th is the day Palestinians mark the “Nakba,” or “catastrophe,” the expulsion of between 750,000 and one million Palestinians by Zionist militias from 1947 to 1949.
Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestinians continues to this day, with Israeli soldiers and settlers continuing to forcibly remove Palestinians from their homes. Palestinians have never stopped resisting, as they do today with growing protests in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah to defend the homes of hundreds of people.
With the US giving Israel $3.8 billion for weapons every year, and many US police departments training in Israel to learn from Israel’s military occupation, Palestine’s struggle matters for the fights here against racist police violence, surveillance and austerity.
