In occupied Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah, Israel is attempting to ethnically cleanse Palestinian families from their homes. Four Palestinian families are on the verge of being evicted this week.
As Palestinians protest in Jerusalem against the evictions and Israel’s ongoing ethnic cleansing campaign, Israeli forces have retaliated with violence, including an attack on Al Aqsa Mosque worshippers that left hundreds injured.
Settler organisations, supported and abetted by Israeli courts and security forces, have asserted ownership of land in Sheikh Jarrah and introduced a gradual takeover of Palestinian homes, backed by the state and its discriminatory laws.
The plans to forcefully evict the families are part of Israel’s larger effort to change the city’s demographic balance by ethnically cleansing Palestinians while simultaneously providing financial and political support to illegal Jewish-only settlements established on stolen Palestinian property.
The UK government must act quickly to prevent Israel from acting with impunity. It must demand that the ongoing eviction proceedings against these families be halted and that Israel be held responsible for all of its acts that lead to the apartheid crime.
