Khaled Barakat calls for freedom for Mohammed Khatib and all Palestinian and Palestine movement prisoners in imperialist jails

On Sunday, 8 February, Khaled Barakat, Palestinian writer and member of the Executive Committee of the Masar Badil, the Palestinian Alternative Revolutionary Path Movement, appeared on Al-Watan TV to discuss the case of Mohammed Khatib. Khatib, European coordinator of Samidoun and a member of the Masar Badil executive committee, was arrested on Saturday, 7 February, when he arrived at Heraklion airport in Crete, Greece, to speak at an event on Palestinian prisoners in occupation prisons, also featuring liberated Palestinian prisoner Abdel-Nasser Issa, speaking virtually.

Khatib remains detained in Greece and was told that he is now the subject of an order banning him from Greek territory for undisclosed “national security” reasons. The order was allegedly issued only two days after the last Greece-Cyprus-“Israel” summit on economic, military and security relations, as well as the ongoing deals in stolen Palestinian gas and its shipment to Europe through Greek and Cypriot pipelines.

In the interview, Barakat highlights the ongoing ties between the right-wing Greek government and the Zionist regime, as well as the escalating repression targeting the growing movement in solidarity with Palestine and the organizing of Palestinians in exile and diaspora (shatat). “There are Palestinian prisoners today in prisons in Italy, in prisons in Germany, and in prisons in the Netherlands, and in American prisons. The number is increasing of prisoners, not only Palestinians, but also supporters of the Palestinian cause. As is the case in prisons in Britain, where dozens of prisoners from Palestine Action have gone on open hunger strikes. We call on Palestinian media to focus on and highlight what is happening in these prisons and the growing role of Palestinians in the shatat. The targeting of comrade Mohammed Khatib is part of this racist campaign against our people in the shatat specifically.”
