The Tunisian Initiative for Supporting Prisoners condemned the arrest of Palestinian activist Mohammed Khatib, coordinator of the Samidoun Network in Europe, by Greek authorities. Khatib was arrested upon entering Greece to participate in a seminar dedicated to discussing the conditions of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
The Initiative considered this arrest to be an arbitrary decision, made in response to Israeli pressure and demands aimed at targeting Al-Khatib and a number of activists supporting the Palestinian cause in Europe. The Initiative emphasized that these policies are part of a continuous Western approach to the Palestinian issue, despite the dangerous escalation of violence in the Palestinian territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
The Initiative called on the Greek authorities to immediately release Mohammed Khatib, guarantee his right to freedom of movement and expression, and enable him to participate in solidarity activities with the Palestinian people organized by activists and supporters within Greece.
The initiative also condemned the new regional alliance between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus, considering it part of a series of alliances aimed at supporting occupation policies, alongside other alliances with Arab states. In this context, it called on Arab and European peoples to escalate their opposition to these agreements.
In conclusion, the initiative emphasized the centrality of the Palestinian prisoners’ issue as a cornerstone of the Palestinian national struggle, calling on freedom-loving people worldwide, both in Tunisia and abroad, to intensify their efforts in support of prisoners in Israeli jails.
