Take Action: Palestinian poet sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia

ashraf-fayadh

Ashraf Fayadh, Palestinian refugee poet and artist living in Saudi Arabia, has been sentenced to death by a Saudi court, on charges of apostasy or abandoning his faith in Islam. The charges appear to be based on his poetry and writing, and may also be a form of retaliation for posting an online video showing Saudi religious police lashing a man in public.

Fayadh is a Palestinian refugee who was born in Saudi Arabia and has become a leading member of the young Saudi art scene. He was arrested in January 2014, his identity documents confiscated, and held for a lengthy period without charge. He was then sentenced to four years in prison and 800 lashes; after he appealed, he was retried last month and sentenced to death. He did not have legal representation.

“According to Fayadh’s friends, when the police failed to prove that his poetry was atheist propaganda, they began berating him for smoking and having long hair,” reported the Guardian. Fayadh said his poetry book, Instructions Within, is “just about me being [a] Palestinian refugee … about cultural and philosophical issues. But the religious extremists explained it as destructive ideas against God.”

One hundred Arab intellectuals have called for Fayadh’s release. Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network joins the call for the immediate freedom of Ashraf Fayadh. His imprisonment, persecution and death sentence by the Saudi regime reflects the deeply reactionary and far-right role played by the Saudi regime in the region – alongside its close imperial partners in the United States, Canada and Europe – that threatens Palestinian and Arab culture, life, and movements and works to block and suppress any struggle for liberation.

Take Action:

1. Call the Saudi Embassy in your area and demand freedom for Ashraf Fayadh. In the United States, call 202-342-3800. In Canada, call 613-237-4100. Find the embassy in your country here:  http://embassy.goabroad.com/embassies-of/saudi-arabia

2. Protest at the Saudi Embassy in your area for freedom for Ashraf Fayadh. Print signs and materials, and gather outside the Saudi embassy with Palestine rights activists, artists and others to demand his freedom. See the list of Saudi embassies here:  http://embassy.goabroad.com/embassies-of/saudi-arabia

3. Contact your government officials . The Saudi regime is a close partner of the United States, Canadian and various European governments. Demand that your government pressure the Saudi regime to release Fayadh.  In Canada, Call the office of the Foreign Minister, Stéphane Dion, at 613-996-5789 and demand Canada pressure Saudi Arabia to release Fayadh, or email: stephane.dion@parl.gc.ca. In the US, call the White House (202-456-1111) and the US State Department (202-647-9572); demand the US pressure Saudi Arabia to release Fayadh. Photos: New Yorkers protest to #StopG4S before global #UNDropG4S week of action

nyc20-8

On Friday, 20 November, New Yorkers gathered outside the offices of G4S, the British/Danish security conglomerate subject to a global boycott call for its occupation and apartheid profiteering, including providing security systems and control rooms for Israeli prisons which hold Palestinian political prisoners, and equipping the Israeli police training center that trains the police attacking Palestinians in Jerusalem and at Al-Aqsa mosque. Samidoun NY has been holding weekly protests outside the New York G4S office, demanding a boycott and distributing leaflets with information on G4S’ activities.

The United Nations contracts with G4S as well – up to $22 million annually in contracts. 220 organizations, including Palestinian and international groups, have called upon the UN to stop doing business with G4S because of its horrendous human rights record.

On November 23-30, 2015, coinciding with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, activists and organizations around the world are organizing a global week of action calling for the UN to end its G4S contracts: #UNDropG4S.

Samidoun and a number of organizations in New York City will be protesting at the United Nations on Monday, 23 November, as part of this global action; actions will also take place in Amman, in Belgium, and in more cities to be announced. Join the NYC protest:

The security corporation G4S is a partner in the occupation, contracting with Zionist army and police. The United Nations contracts with G4S in over 24 countries, including Jordan. Join us to convey the message to the United Nations to cancel its contracts with G4S until the corporation ends its contracts with the Zionist prison administration, providing security systems and control rooms to the prisons that detain Palestinians and Jordanians, and ends its participation in the Zionist police academy. This is part of an international campaign to pressure the UN to stop doing business with G4S.

#UNDropG4S: Call for global actions November 23-30

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network is participating in the following call for global actions to demand the United Nations cancel its contracts with G4S, organizing an action in New York City on 23 November at 4:00 pm. Below is the global call to action (Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1627201044209164/)

unboycottg4s

Palestinian groups and solidarity networks across the world are campaigning for the UN to cancel its contracts with G4S, the private security company that helps Israel run prisons at which Palestinian political prisoners are held without trial and subjected to torture.

In October alone, Israel arrested over 1,000 Palestinians as a means to repress Palestinian popular resistance. Many of these people will be held in Israeli prisons that G4S is helping to run. By contracting G4S to provide security services worth than $22m each year, the UN turning a blind eye to the role that G4S plays in Israel’s oppression of Palestinians.

Palestinian organisations including Addameer, the Palestinian Human Rights Organizations Council, the BDS National Committee, along with more than 200 groups from across the world recently wrote to the UN saying that its relationship with G4S was out of step with the UN’s stated policies and principles. So far, no response has been received to that letter. Not it’s time to turn up the pressure on the UN.

November 29 is the UN-declared International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. On that day and the few days on either side, groups in Jordan, New York and across Europe are mobilising to hold actions at UN offices to show the UN that there is growing opposition to its relationship with G4S. There will also be online and social media actions to get involved with.

The broad international coalition involved in the campaign is encouraging supporters to:

1) Hold a creative protest action or letter hand in at a UN office near you. Many capital cities also have smaller offices for the UNHCR, the UN body that has the largest number of contracts with G4S. Actions are already planned in Brussels, Rome, Dublin, London, Amman, New York City, and beyond Nov 23-30.

2) TAKE ACTION ONLINE:
– Encourage your members and supporters to take a simple online action when it is posted here around Nov. 27.
– Join the Facebook event page and share posts as they come through with your followers.
– Tweet and use other social media to create buzz around the events – example tweets and memes will follow shortly.

Mohammed Abu Aker among 27 Palestinians arrested by Israeli occupation forces

m-abuaker

Mohammed Abu Aker, 20, Palestinian youth organizer and refugee, the son of Dheisheh refugee camp leader imprisoned journalist, administrative detainee and recent hunger striker Nidal Abu Aker, was arrested early this morning, 19 November, by Israeli occupation forces who invaded the refugee camp, raiding the family home and attacking the area.

Abu Aker, a leftist youth organizer, was one of at least 27 Palestinians seized by Israeli occupation forces in the West Bank today. Other Palestinians arrested included nine former political prisoners from the Nablus area, and prominent Hamas leader and former political prisoner – who served 27 years in Israeli jails – Omar Barghouthi in Kobar, near Ramallah. This came after 41 arrests of Palestinians by the occupation army on Wednesday, in Dheisheh, Shuafat, Aida and Qalandiya camps among others, and including a number of children, including a 12-year-old from Jerusalem.

donya-muslehThe arrest of Abu Aker followed the arrest of 19-year-old university student Donya Musleh, an activist with the Progressive Student Labor Front, in Dheisheh camp on 16 November, the tenth Palestinian woman arrested so far this month. The Palestinian refugee camps have been particularly targeted amid the rising intifada, including for home demolitions, a particularly destructive form of collective punishment by the Israeli occupation that is even more dangerous and threatening when carried out in a crowded, tightly built refugee camp.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine issued a statement, noting that “the Zionist occupation is continually targeting Palestinian refugee camps, especially Dheisheh camp, where yesterday a mass arrest campaign was carried out against the cadres and members of the Front. These arrests will not break the resistance or deter our people from continuing their valiant intifada and confronting the crimes of the occupation.”

Since the escalating popular Palestinian uprising began in October, well over 1,500 Palestinians have been arrested by Israeli occupation forces.

Take action! Demand freedom for Palestinian prisoners.

1. Contact your government officials and demand an end to international silence and complicity with the attacks on Palestinians. In Canada, Call the office of the new Foreign Minister, Stéphane Dion, at 613-996-5789 and demand an end to Canadian support for Israel, or email: stephane.dion@parl.gc.ca. In the US, call the White House (202-456-1111) and the US State Department (202-647-9572); demand an end to US aid to Israel. In the EU, contact your MEP – you can find your MEP here, or use the tool at http://freepalestine.eu/ to both call for an end to the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

2. Protest at the Israeli consulate or embassy in your area.  This is a time of uprising and intifada – protests are happening around the world and are more urgent than ever. see our list of actions here:https://samidoun.net/2015/10/take-action-rise-up-with-palestine-global-protest-actions/ Hold a community event or discussion, or include this issue in your next event about Palestine and social justice. Please email us at samidoun@samidoun.net to inform us of your action.

3. Boycott, Divest and Sanction. Hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law. Don’t buy Israeli goods, and campaign to end investments in corporations that profit from the occupation. G4S, a global security corporation, is heavily involved in providing services to Israeli prisons that jail Palestinian political prisoners – there is a global call to boycott itPalestinian political prisoners have issued a specific call urging action on G4S. United Nations agencies hold contracts worth over $22 million annually with G4S, a British-Danish company that is both the world’s largest security firm and its second-biggest private employer.

G4S also equips and maintains Israeli detention centers and jails where Palestinians are held and tortured, as well as training facilities that prepare occupation forces for their attacks on Palestinians.

The Palestinian prisoners’ movement recently issued an unprecedented appeal for escalated boycotts of G4S over its participation in Israel’s colonial policies off occupation and repression.

As the UN marks its official International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, join us as we answer the prisoners’ call by launching a global wave of action demanding the UN end its contracts with G4S.

Addameer and Palestinian human rights groups issue factsheet on force-feeding

addameerlogoAddameer and the Palestinian Human Rights Organizations Council (PHROC) released a factshet and detailed analysis on force-feeding and its illegality under International Human Rights Law and medical ethics and standards on 17 November.

The paper provides historical background on hunger strikes across several contexts and the use of force-feeding, then proceeds to provide a political and legal analysis of the recent legislation by Israeli occupation which provides a “legal basis” for the force-feeding of Palestinian prisoners and detainees on hunger strike.

Defend the Anti-War Committee in Minneapolis!

3 Arrested at Law School Palestine protest to have first day in court, standing by the right to dissent

On November 3, police were called on to forcibly remove protesters from a UMN Law School lecture by Moshe Halbertal, who protesters called “an apologist for Israeli war crimes.” Three individuals were arrested that day, including two organizers with the Anti-War Committee, and an attorney acting as an informal legal observer of police actions against the protesters. All three were booked into jail and held for some 8 hours, before being released with a court date set for Wednesday, November 18 at 8:30am. Anti-War Committee spokespeople will be available to the media before the hearing, at 8:00am outside the Public Safety Facility at 401 S. 4th Ave, Minneapolis.

During the protest by community members and students, some of the protesters had entered the lecture hall and effectively denied Halbertal a platform. They interrupted his presentation some two dozen times, with facts about Israeli atrocities, Halbertal’s public record in defense of IDF actions, and demands that the University honor the international boycott of Israel.

In addition to calling in police, several Law School faculty have published criticism of the protesters, and called for disciplinary actions against any students involved. Among other criticisms, they have argued that disrupting the speaking event was not a “legitimate” form of dissent.

Standing by the actions of protesters, AWC member Jess Sundin said, “We see the same kind of attacks on protesters demanding justice for Jamar Clark, killed by Minneapolis police this week. Some folks want to say there’s a right way and a wrong way to demand justice. Whether you’re sitting in an ivory tower, or in your car on Interstate-94, you show your true colors when you criticize protesters that inconvenience you or make you uncomfortable. As people of conscience, we have an obligation to speak up for justice. From Palestine, to North Minneapolis, lives are at stake, and we will not be silent.”

Last week, the Anti-War Committee (AWC) issued a statement, responding to critics of the November 3 protest. It says in part, “We are compelled to challenge Israel’s policies of apartheid and occupation, and its defenders, at every turn.” The full statement is published on their website – http://antiwarcommittee.org/2015/11/10/anti-war-committee-statement-on-the-november-3rd-protest-against-war-crimes-apologist-moshe-halbertal/.

20 November, NYC: Tell G4S to stop supporting Israel’s repression and torture of Palestinians

In March, the Palestinian Prisoners Society reported that Israeli forces torture roughly 95% of the Palestinian political prisoners they detain.

Israeli mistreatment of Palestinian detainees includes children, who are routinely abused to coerce confessions.

These violations occur inside a network of prisons and detention centers equipped by the British/Danish company G4S, the world’s largest security firm and second-biggest private employer.

In August, the Palestinian prisoners’ movement called for an escalation in boycotts of G4S.

As detentions of Palestinians spike amid a wave of repression intended to crush a popular uprising against 67 years of ethnic cleansing and occupation, demand G4S end its complicity in Israel’s crimes.

Support Palestinian prisoners, the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Resistance! End all G4S, US and UN support for Zionism! Free Palestine, from the river to the sea!
