Background

Death of Suha Jarrar, daughter of Khalida Jarrar

On 11 July 2021, Suha Jarrar, age 30, a senior legal researcher and advocacy officer with Al-Haq human rights organization and daughter of Ghassan and Khalida Jarrar, was unexpectedly found dead in her apartment near the Palestine Medical Complex, Ramallah, Palestine. She had been serving Al-Haq as a human rights advocate before the United Nations treaty-bodies and the Human Rights Council since February 2017, specializing in gender, environment and climate change.

Al-Haq has called on the UN Special Procedures to immediately and urgently intervene to exercise the authority associated with their mandate, to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Khalida Jarrar by the Israeli authorities, on humanitarian grounds so that she can attend the funeral of her daughter, and mourn in human dignity.

The Arbitrary Detention of Khalida Jarrar

#FreeKhalidaJarrar

Khalida Jarrar, a Palestinian civil society leader, lawmaker, and human rights activist who calls for women’s rights and for the realization of Palestinians’ rights, notably the Palestinian right to return, has been constantly and systematically harassed and targeted by the Israeli occupying authorities for her human rights work, especially in her leading role with regards to work related to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Khalida is currently held at Damon prison, serving a two-year sentence.

Khalida was first detained by the Israeli occupying forces in 1989 on the occasion of a Women’s Day demonstration for one month without trial. She was subsequently detained three additional times, for an accumulated period of 57 months: from 2 April 2015 to June 2016, from 2 July 2018 to 28 February 2019, and since 31 October 2019. Furthermore, Khalida was issued a travel ban since 1998, which was only lifted once in 2010 to enable her to seek medical treatment in Jordan. On 20 August 2014, she was ordered by the Israeli military to forcibly transfer to Jericho for a period of six months, on the basis of so-called security threat, finally reduced to one month.

Most recently, Khalida Jarrar was detained on 31 October 2019, when 12 Israeli military vehicles surrounded her house in Al-Bireh, and around 20-armed Israeli Occupying Forces raided the house at approximately 3:00 am. On 1 March 2021, Ofer military court sentenced Khalida to 24 months in prison and a NIS 4,000 fine. During the hearing session, the military prosecutor amended Khalida’s indictment, limiting it to her political role and work with the Palestinian Authority. Further declaring that there are no charges against her relating to affiliation to any military, financial nor organizational activities.

Al-Haq has made an Urgent Appeal to United Nations Special Procedures Calling for the Immediate and Unconditional Release of Human Rights Defender Khalida Jarrar, to Attend the Funeral of her Late Daughter, Suha Jarrar. Read full submission from Al-Haq.

Al-Haq has called on mandate holders to:

●      Work expeditiously to ensure from the Israeli authorities the immediate and unconditional release of Khalida Jarrar, so that she can attend the funeral of and mourn in dignity, her late daughter, Suha Jarrar;

●      Noting that in Islamic practice, funerals take place very closely after the deceased has passed, with the funeral of Suha Jarrar expected as early as Tuesday 13 July 2021. It is therefore imperative that the mandate holders intervene swiftly as a matter of urgency;

●      To make every effort to bring Israel, the Occupying Power, into compliance with its obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law.

New outrage: Israeli occupation denies early release for Khalida Jarrar – take action to demand her freedom!

Palestinian lawyers reported on Monday, 12 July that the Israeli occupation rejected their legal appeal seeking the early release of imprisoned Palestinian feminist and national leader, Khalida Jarrar, to participate in the funeral of her daughter, Suha Jarrar, who passed away on Sunday in Ramallah.

The Israeli occupation wants to deny even this basic human need to Khalida Jarrar, to see her daughter one last time. She is imprisoned on political charges and has only two months remaining in her sentence, imposed by an illegitimate Israeli military court for her public activities and advocacy for Palestinian liberation.

Immediate actions:

This latest attack on Jarrar and her family came as thousands of people around the world have signed a petition, demanded their governments take action and expressed their outrage at the ongoing repression directed at Khalida Jarrar and her family, even at a moment of great tragedy. Suha Jarrar, 30, was a committed Palestinian human rights defender who worked with Al-Haq and spoke around the world, defending and upholding Palestinian rights and liberation.

In occupied Palestine ’48 and the occupied West Bank of Palestine, protesters gathered outside Damon prison – where Khalida Jarrar is detained – and Ofer prison, demanding her freedom. They were attacked by Israeli occupation forces, who fired tear gas and sound bombs against the Palestinians calling for a mother to be allowed to attend her daughter’s funeral.

In Gaza City, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine organized a protest outside the International Committee of the Red Cross, demanding action from the ICRC to secure Jarrar’s release. Representatives of all Palestinian factions and prisoner support organizations joined the protest, and Palestinian child Nadine Abdel Latif spoke in English, demanding Khalida be free to say farewell to her beloved daughter.

Suha Jarrar is scheduled to be buried Tuesday afternoon, 13 July, with a funeral procession from the family home in Ramallah to the Al-Ain Mosque in Al-Bireh to the Ramallah cemetery.

Palestinian prisoners are routinely denied early release or even furlough to attend the funerals of their family members and loved ones, as well as being denied family visits with their living relatives behind bars. On the contrary, Israeli Jewish criminal prisoners (rather than “security prisoners,” the term used by the Israeli occupation to denote Palestinian political prisoners) are routinely given furloughs and early release to attend funerals or visit their families.

We urge all supporters of Palestine to amplify and intensify the international call to demand freedom for Khalida Jarrar.

Boycott Israel!

The international, Arab and Palestinian campaign to boycott Israel can play an important role at this critical time. Local boycott groups can protest and label Israeli produce and groceries. Demand Your Government Sanction Israel!

The racist, settler colonial state of Israel and its war crimes against the Palestinian people are enabled and backed extensively by the over $3.8 billion each year given to Israel by the United States — targeted directly to support the Israeli occupation military killing children, women, men and elders throughout occupied Palestine. From Canada to Australia to the European Union, Western governments and imperialist powers provide ongoing diplomatic, political and economic support to Israel as well as selling billions of dollars of weaponry to the settler-colonial state. Meanwhile, they also purchase billions of dollars in weaponry from the Israeli state. Governments in league with imperialist powers, such as in the Philippines, Brazil, India and elsewhere, also buy weapons and “security” services — all “battle-tested” on the Palestinian population. Call your representatives, MPs, political officials and demand your government sanction Israel now, cut off all aid, expel its ambassadors, and stop buying and selling weapons!

Freedom for Khalida Jarrar! Appeal for immediate release upon the passing of Suha Jarrar

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network extends its deepest condolences to Khalida, Ghassan and Yafa Jarrar upon the tragic passing of Suha Jarrar, who died on Sunday, July 11 at the age of 31.

Suha, Khalida and Ghassan’s daughter, Yafa’s sister, was a tireless advocate for Palestinian rights and liberation, speaking around the world to advance Palestinian freedom.

At this horrendous moment for her and her family, Khalida Jarrar, Palestinian leader, feminist, parliamentarian and organizer, remains imprisoned in Israeli jails as a political leader, denied even the comfort of her loved ones. We extend our condolences to all who knew, loved and honored Suha and demand the immediate release of Khalida Jarrar to be among her family at this time.

Al-Haq, the Palestinian human rights organization, where Suha Jarrar worked, has filed an urgent appeal with UN Special Procedures for Khalida Jarrar’s immediate release.

**

We are also joining in the below appeal circulated by many Palestinian groups and organizers:

Instead of surrendering to the belief that revolutionary leader and former Palestinian Legislative Council member Khalida Jarrar will be denied the right to bury her daughter Suha, whose death was announced this evening, let us work locally and internationally to form the necessary pressure that will make it possible.

Khalida is a Palestinian political prisoner, who was arrested for her national political activism. She has the right to participate in her daughter’s funeral.

Khalida has been incarcerated for nearly two years and is due for release within two months. She has been arrested by the Israeli regime on many occasions, during which time she has been subjected to various forms of abuse and persecution.

The Israeli regime’s prison administration should release Khalida as soon as possible so that she can bury and mourn her daughter and exercise her most fundamental human rights.

Samidoun to launch delegation to Lebanon and Palestinian refugee camps: Support grassroots organizing!

In late July 2021, Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network will be launching a delegation to Lebanon and the Palestinian refugee camps. The delegation, announced on the 49th anniversary of the assassination of Palestinian writer, leader and revolutionary Ghassan Kanafani, will include activists and organizers of the Samidoun Network based in Belgium, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and elsewhere.

“The delegation’s mission is primarily an expression of political and cultural solidarity and struggle, aiming to highlight the reality of Palestinians in the refugee camps today, as well as learning from and building upon the history of the Palestinian resistance movement and the Lebanese national movement.” – Mohammed Khatib, coordinator of Samidoun in Europe.

The delegation will deliver the funds raised by supporters around the world to create the “People’s Ambulance” of Beddawi camp, in partnership with the Arab Palestinian Cultural Club. It will meet with a number of Palestinian and Lebanese organizations, institutions, and popular and youth centers in the camps, as well as the national campaign to liberate Georges Abdallah and the Campaign to Boycott Supporters of “Israel” in Lebanon.

The delegation is self-funded by Samidoun Network and the participants taking part in the delegation and its meetings. However, the delegation also aims to support organizing and build resources in the Palestinian refugee camps and throughout Lebanon, which is currently experiencing an extreme financial crisis, the greatest burden of which is falling on the most marginalized.

Your contribution can help the delegation to support the work of grassroots organizers in the Palestinian refugee camps to sustain and build their work as well as launching new centers for organizing for liberation and return for Palestine. Victory for Ghadanfar Abu Atwan after 65 days of hunger strike – towards victory for Palestine!

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network salutes Ghadanfar Abu Atwan on his victory over Israeli imprisonment after 65 days of hunger strike. Abu Atwan’s sister, Benazeer, and his lawyer, Jawad Boulos, confirmed that he will be released later today, 8 July, and the administrative detention order against him cancelled. His steadfastness and commitment to struggle, like that of his fellow Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, inspire all those around the world who support the Palestinian people and their just cause of return and liberation.

His family has confirmed that he will not end his strike until he is with his family and outside Israeli prisons and detention.

Abu Atwan, 28, from Dura near al-Khalil,, launched his hunger strike after the administrative detention order against him was renewed, demanding his freedom. He was seized by occupation forces in October 2020 and ordered to six months in administrative detention; his detention was then renewed for another six months, sparking him to launch his open hunger strike for freedom.

Administrative detention was first introduced to Palestine by British colonialism. These orders may be issued for one to six months at a time, and they are indefinitely renewable. As a result, Palestinians routinely are jailed for years at a time with no charge and no trial. Neither they nor their loved ones know when they will be released, and administrative detention serves as a form of psychological torture. The detained Palestinians and their lawyers are barred from seeing the “secret file” used to justify their imprisonment.

The use of administrative detention, already routinely used to arbitrarily detain Palestinians, has been escalating rapidly, with over 200 detention orders issued since the beginning of May 2021. There are currently over 500 Palestinians jailed without charge or trial under administrative detention.

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network sends its warmest congratulations to Ghadanfar Abu Atwan, his family, the Palestinian people and all friends of Palestine and forces of justice in the world on this occasion, many of whom organized, protested, launched solidarity hunger strikes, called their representatives and signed petitions to demand his release. His victory must inspire us all to continue the struggle to liberate all Palestinian political prisoners and to liberate Palestine, from the river to the sea.

Palestinian student Layan Nasir seized by Israeli occupation forces

Palestinian student Layan Nasir was seized in the early morning hours of Wednesday, 7 July by Israeli occupation forces who invaded her home. She is a student at Bir Zeit University who wrote on social media only two days ago about the attacks she suffered at the hands of undercover Palestinian Authority security forces wearing civilian clothes, who violently beat protesters against the assassination of Palestinian activist Nizar Banat. She is currently being held in the Israeli Ofer prison.

There are currently hundreds of Palestinian students detained by the Israeli occupation. At Bir Zeit University alone, Nasir’s university, approximately 74 students were detained by occupation soldiers during the 2019-2020 academic year. Students are routinely and specifically targeted for Israeli colonial imprisonment and repression for their student activism, organizing student events and participation in student elections and other political and social activities on campus.  Just days ago, a UN panel declared that the imprisonment of Palestinian students Layan Kayed, Ruba Assi and Elia Abu Hijleh was unlawful and arbitrary, calling for their release.

**

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network demands the immediate release of Layan Nasir and urges all friends of justice in Palestine to join the #FreePalestinianStudents campaignThis campaign brings organizations together in a global call to urge the immediate freedom of imprisoned Palestinian students and the protection of Palestinian students’ right to education, right to political expression and involvement and right to determine their own futures. The Israeli occupation has targeted Palestinian students and, specifically, the Palestinian student movement and Palestinian student organizations for harsh repression and political detention and imprisonment.

We join together to call for action and support for Palestinian students behind bars, including:

  • Boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel, including Israeli academic institutions, which are fully complicit in the systematic deprivation of Palestinian rights.
  • Ending all military and economic aid, military transactions, joint projects and direct funding to the Israeli occupation regime by governments around the world.
  • Challenging “normalization” programs that aim to legitimize Israeli occupation — this is an attempt to legitimize the criminalization and targeting of Palestinian students.
  • Organizing to build direct links of solidarity with Palestinian students and the Palestinian student movement, to ensure that they will not be isolated from their global community of support despite all attempts by the Israeli occupation.

Free Haitham Siyaj: Stop PA Political Imprisonment of Palestinian Activists!

UPDATE as of 8 July: Political detainee Haitham Siyaj was released from Palestinian Authority prisons today following the tireless work of lawyers and activists seeking his release and following three days of hunger strike. He is currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital for the injuries he suffered due to beating and abuse by PA security forces as he protested the assassination of Nizar Banat. We continue to emphasize the call for the immediate release of all political prisoners in PA jails — they are detained as part of the PA’s ‘security coordination’ with the Israeli occupation

Haitham Siyaj, Palestinian struggler and organizer, remains imprisoned by the Palestinian Authority, his detention extended another 24 hours on 7 July 2021. Even after many of the political detainees seized by PA security forces while protesting the assassination of Nizar Banat — part and parcel of PA security coordination with the Israeli occupation — were released, Haitham Siyaj remains behind bars. He was beaten so badly by PA security forces that he was hospitalized; he was then seized from the hospital and has been held in detention since that time. He is now on hunger strike for the third day to demand his immediate release and is refusing medical treatment or testing until he is free.

This is not Siyaj’s first time being subjected to Palestinian Authority arrest and imprisonment. He is one of the comrades of Basil al-Araj who was jailed by the Palestinian Authority in 2016 with the freedom fighter and revolutionary intellectual, later assassinated by the Israeli occupation. He and his comrades were subjected to torture and abuse during this time and were released only after carrying out a hunger strike. PA President Mahmoud Abbas boasted about their arrest when discussing the PA’s usefulness to the Israeli occupation as a means of suppressing Palestinian resistance.

Siyaj has been repeatedly seized by Israeli occupation forces and was imprisoned on multiple occasions, almost always jailed without charge or trial under administrative detention. During one such arrest, he was jailed for over 2 years without ever being charged or tried on any allegation.

Now Haitham, a committed struggler for Palestinian liberation, is being imprisoned once again by the Palestinian Authority.

The ongoing detention of Haitham Siyaj and attacks on Palestinian protesters is a conscious policy of security coordination with the Israeli occupation, with the PA functioning to serve the interests of the Zionist colonial project. The “security coordination” framework is overseen and implemented by the United States, Canada and the European Union (all engaged in training, funding and oversight of Palestinian Authority security forces). The purpose of these Palestinian Authority security forces and the “security coordination” project under which they carry weapons is to prevent the Palestinian people and their liberation movement from effectively resisting and overthrowing the Israeli occupation regime throughout occupied Palestine.

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network demands the immediate release of Haitham Siyaj and an end to the ongoing attacks on Palestinian strugglers.

The PA and its funders and trainers must be held accountable for its ongoing betrayal of the Palestinian people and its collaboration with the occupation regime and Zionist colonialism. We note that this crime is also an urgent call to boycott, isolate and resist Israeli occupation throughout Palestine and elsewhere. The Oslo project is backed by Zionism, imperialism and reactionary regimes – and it must and will fall on the road to the liberation of Palestine, from the river to the sea.

Take Action:

  1. Call the Palestinian Authority mission, embassy or consulate in your country. Demand the PA immediately release Haitham Siyaj. Get the number of your local consulate or embassy here: https://embassy.goabroad.com/embassies-of/palestine
    Tell them:

    1. Palestinian activist Haitham Siyaj is being jailed as a political detainee by the Palestinian Authority.
    2. This is unacceptable, as was the assassination of Nizar Banat.
    3. Security coordination and political imprisonment are only serving the interests of the Israeli occupation and harm the Palestinian people.
    4. Haitham Siyaj and all other political detainees must be freed immediately.
  2. Protest at the Palestinian Authority embassy, mission or consulate in your country – or at the Israeli embassy.. Demand justice and accountability for the assassination of Nizar Banat and make it clear that the PA does not represent the Palestinian people’s struggle for liberation! Find the PA mission or embassy in your country here: https://embassy.goabroad.com/embassies-of/palestine – we note — this is also an Israeli crime, first and foremost in the interests of the occupation. Protest at Israeli embassies and consulates: https://embassy.goabroad.com/embassies-of/israel
  3. Demand your government stop supporting Palestinian Authority security forces and sanction Israel. Aid and training of PA security forces is not designed to provide security to Palestinians, but instead to bolster the Israeli occupation and repress Palestinian resistance. Legitimate aid must support the rights of the Palestinian people, not directly undermine those rights. Call your representatives, MPs, political officials and demand your government sanction Israel now, cut off all aid, expel its ambassadors, and stop buying and selling weapons – and stop financing and training the PA security forces to assist the occupation in its crimes.
  4. Join Palestinian movements and organizations fighting back against Oslo. Many Palestinians, inside Palestine and in exile and diaspora, are working to bring down Oslo and restore the compass of the struggle – for liberation and return, from the river to the sea, and upholding the resistance as the legitimate voice of the Palestinian people. Learn more and get involved with the Masar Badil (Alternative Palestinian Path) conference to convene in Madrid in October 2021.
  5. Boycott Israel – The international, Arab and Palestinian campaign to boycott Israel can play an important role at this critical time. Local boycott groups can protest and label Israeli produce and groceries.  By participating in the boycott of Israel, you can directly help to throw a wrench in the economy of settler colonialism. Download our Boycott Flyer to distribute at supermarkets, stores and other venues in your community!
