Samidoun: Solidarity with the Refugee Movement for Rights and Justice in Greece

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network expresses its strongest solidarity with the Refugee Movement for Rights and Justice, a new mobilization that has arisen in Greece in response to the latest attacks on refugees’ human dignity and rights. Approximately 600 individuals and families will be stripped of critical benefits under a new series of measures announced by the Greek government.

The Greek Ministry of Migration Policy announced that recognized refugees will lose their access to housing and cash assistance under a European Union policy. It should be noted that even recognized refugees in Greece struggle to find housing or employment and often have no means to support themselves. This policy is in fact a policy of exclusion that is layered upon many other systems of discrimination, racism and rejection that refugees face in Europe at the hands of European states.

It should especially be noted that the European powers driving this decision include the most powerful states in the EU. These countries are deeply involved in the ongoing wars, exploitation, violence and climate destruction that have forced people to migrate from their homes in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Palestine and sub-Saharan Africa. In many cases, EU bombers have directly participated in the military invasion of these countries, while in other cases, weapons industries have profited directly from ongoing wars. EU foreign policy is also directly complicit in the Israeli colonization and apartheid regime in Palestine, including the siege on Gaza that has forced many people to flee their homes.

RMRJ activists distribute information about the cuts and actions people can take

Therefore, the very powers that are directing the Greek government to cut the small lifelines of aid provided by cash and housing assistance or refugee camps are responsible in large part for their suffering, dispossession and forced migration. In addition, the crisis of refugees in Greece, many of whom are struggling to reach other European states, has been cemented by the development of the Fortress Europe policy and, in particular, the EU-Turkey deal which has forced countless impoverished and marginalized people to take even greater risks to reach safety. People struggling to preserve their lives are threatened with forced deportations to countries facing current military occupations and wars at the hands of the United States, the European Union and their imperialist and reactionary regime allies.

The seas have become deadly for people seeking refuge and asylum, and now even recognized refugees are facing further exclusion and impoverishment at the hands of the Greek government and the EU powers. It should be noted that this, much like the policies that have deepened the economic crisis in Greece on the backs of working-class and poor people, are directed by the EU in the interests of the wealthiest imperialist powers and their capitalist classes.

Greek people and refugees in Greece together suffer from austerity and the confiscation of basic economic and social human rights at the hands of an EU regime that seeks to extract wealth at the expense of the Greek people – and at the expense of refugees forced to flee their homeland. This is only the latest appalling action of the Greek government under Alexis Tsipras.

Tsipras’ party SYRIZA was elected to govern Greece with a mandate to fight back against EU austerity, confront racism and support the Palestinian people. Instead it has acquiesced to harsh regimes of EU control and domination, deepened the Greek military and economic alliance with Israeli apartheid (including the planning of the so-called “EastMed” gas pipeline for the theft of Palestinian natural resources) and is now imposing an even more brutal regime of poverty upon the most marginalized people in the country, again at the behest of EU authorities.

In response, the Refugee Movement for Rights and Justice has announced a series of actions to demand that this new policy be stopped before people’s lives and health are put at even further risk. It should be noted that many refugees already face inhumane and nearly unlivable conditions inside the refugee camps. “Those who can spend astronomical sums to finance wars and create our crisis and our suffering must assume the responsibility to find a solution,” declared the movement in its founding statement. The Movement’s next action will be a demonstration planned for 16 March at 2:00 pm at Victoria Square in Athens.

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network stands in full solidarity with the Refugee Movement for Rights and Justice and joins in its demands. We note that among the refugees seeking asylum in Europe are many Palestinians, many going through a second Nakba after being forced from their homes and lands by Zionist forces in 1948 and many more facing a new Nakba due to siege, occupation and colonization in Gaza and throughout Palestine. These refugees have been denied their fundamental right to return to their homes and lands for over 70 years.

Furthermore, we emphasize the fundamental responsibility of U.S. and EU imperialism for creating the crises that have taken countless lives and forced many others to seek safety – where instead, many find only even more death, destruction and repression due to racist and colonialist policies of exclusion, deportation and militarization. For all refugees, we demand and defend the right to stay and the right to return, the freedom to move and the full recognition of their human rights, especially their economic, social and cultural rights including the right to health care, education, housing and work. We urge all friends of Palestine in Greece to take action and lend their support and action to this critical call for justice.

We reprint below the founding statement of the Refugee Movement for Rights and Justice:

A few days ago, the Greek government, through the Ministry of Migration Policy, made a decision backed by the European Union – DG Home Fund Agency to cut financial and housing aid to the refugees. This decision is intended as a first stage for over 600 people and families on Greek territory.

The implementation of this unjust and hasty decision will create a new crisis that will only add to the ongoing suffering of the refugees. Hundreds of families, children and youth will be displaced to the streets, where neither shelter nor food will be found. This unjust decision is also a result ofthe Turkey-EU agreement in 2016, which resulted in the conversion the Greek Islands to refuge to mass prisons and detention camps until this moment. In addition, such decisions only encourage and incite political forces on the extreme right in Greece and throughout Europe to exploit the living conditions of the Greek people, suffering from a suffocating financial crisis. This is also the result of the reckless, profit-seeking European policies that come at the expense of human rights and international law.

It is our duty as refugees of various nationalities and social backgrounds to stand together collectively to confront these racist decisions, peacefully and in unity, in order to raise our voices high, pressure the concerned parties to shoulder their responsibilities, and obtain all of our rights, which have so far been violated and denied. Our first goal is to not allow the implementation of this decision or any similar resolutions that violate our rights as refugees.

In response to this situation, we are duty-bound to shoulder our responsibilities toward our people, all of the poor and the refugees. We are a group of refugee youth of different nationalities who have come together to form the Refugee Movement for Rights and Justice to confront these decisions and develop a series of actions and activities to challenge these machinations of political interest on the part of the Greek government and the European Union. We know very well that the justifications expressed by international organizations, alongside the Greek government and the European Union, are nothing but deception and an attempt to cover up the failure of their programs. The disbursement of hundreds of millions of Euros on temporary projects has failed to provide a real, radical solution to refugees’ suffering.

Those who can spend astronomical sums to finance wars and create our crisis and our suffering must take responsibility in finding a solution. This financial and housing assistance is insufficient and does not meet our needs, but it is one of our rights that we will not abandon.

Stopping this unjust decision depends on our participation and the spirit of solidarity among the refugee population. This decision is only a first step in targeting all refugees and their rights, contrary to justice and international law.

Jafra Foundation for Relief and Youth Development and Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network cordially invite you to attend a special dedication ceremony to celebrate the life of the legendary Palestinian leader and freedom fighter Maher Yamani, who passed away on Thursday, 21 February 2019 in Beirut, Lebanon.

Maher Yamani was a Palestinian refugee who was born in Lebanon in 1949. In 1966, he became a member of the Arab Nationalist Movement, and became a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) since its establishment in 1967. He worked in the special operations unit with PFLP leader Wadie Haddad. He helped plan an aircraft hijacking in 1968, when an Israeli El Al plane was hijacked in Greece. As a result, he was initially sentenced to 31 years in prison, but due to his age the sentence was later reduced to 14 years and 3 months. He was subsequently released in an exchange deal after the hijacking of another aircraft by the PFLP. He served as the associate secretary of George Habash between 1979 and 1982, and he was a member of the Central Committee since 2000.

Your presence would be a fulfillment of our pledge to all martyrs and prisoners.

Long live the struggle of the Palestinian people for justice and liberation.

Glory to the martyrs; salutes to all prisoners of freedom!

“Humboldt 3” head to court, challenging Israeli apartheid while confronting silencing attempts

Three activists in Berlin are facing criminal charges of “trespassing” and “assault” for speaking out against Israeli apartheid and war crimes at a speech by Knesset member Aliza Lavie in the German capital in 2017. Majed Abusalama, a Palestinian from Gaza who has lived through multiple bombardments and seen friends and loved ones killed by repeated Israeli attacks, and Israeli activists Ronnie Barkan and Stavit Sinai, have pledged to challenge Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity in court as well.

“We are, however, determined to use our relative privilege in order to turn the tables against Israel and take it to court. We do not concern ourselves with the consequences, but rather with the opportunity of challenging Israel along with Germany’s complicity in crimes against humanity,” they wrote in a statement.

While they faced a media attack and criminalization in Germany, the three activists were recently honored in Copenhagen, Denmark, with an award for their courage in challenging apartheid by the Municipality. Prof. Richard Falk, himself frequently targeted for scurrilous allegations by supporters of Israeli apartheid and Zionist racism, came to Berlin to speak in support of the Humboldt 3:

The attempt to silence these three activists echoes other cases around the world of people criminally prosecuted for interrupting Israeli war criminals or representatives of the Israeli apartheid state, including the “Irvine 11” in California.

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network expresses its support and solidarity with the Humboldt 3 and all people around the world who face criminalization and persecution to speak up for Palestinian rights. There are nearly 6,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails locked behind bars because of their struggle for the liberation of their land and people. The struggle to free the prisoners and free Palestine includes the struggle against repression of Palestine activism internationally – it is because this activism is so important that the Israeli state and its supporters in imperialist states and reactionary regimes work so hard to criminalize and suppress it. We urge all to participate in the solidarity protest at Moabit criminal court on 4 March and upcoming actions in support of these activists.

Their statement is reprinted below:

By Ronnie Barkan, Stavit Sinai & Majed Abusalama

We are three human rights activists, two Jewish-Israeli dissidents and a Palestinian survivor of several Israeli onslaughts on Gaza, who will soon be facing trial in Berlin for disrupting a representative of the Israeli state and challenging her responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity. We are charged with two counts of criminal offenses: trespassing and assault.

Our protest, for which we were charged, took place in June 2017 in front of MK Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid), member of the Israeli apartheid parliament as well as Chair of the anti-BDS lobby and Head of the Israeli mission to the European Council, who was hosted by the Deutsch-Israelische Gesellschaft at the Humboldt University in Berlin. MK Lavie herself is personally accountable for her role as a coalition member during the 2014 attack on the besieged Gaza Strip, where over 2,200 people have been killed, including 89 entire families that were obliterated.

Aliza Lavie furthermore sees herself as fighting the “delegitimization” of Israel.

From her Knesset page:

“Lavie also focuses on hasbara (efforts to improve Israel’s image abroad) and fighting the delegitimization of Israel, strengthening the status of the IDF…”

The backlash we experienced soon after was overwhelming as a media frenzy broke out throughout Germany and Israel, which included slander, lies and the outrageous claim of anti-Semitism against us, even though two of us are descendants of Holocaust-surviving families.

Having criminal allegations leveled against activists is a common and standard practice in Germany. We are, however, determined to use our relative privilege in order to turn the tables against Israel and take it to court. We do not concern ourselves with the consequences, but rather with the opportunity of challenging Israel along with Germany’s complicity in crimes against humanity.

In spite of the character assassination and certain restrictions against us, our trial signals to the neutralized and pacified German civil society that it cannot choose its criminals based on its history – as Prof. Richard Falk recently pointed out in a joint event concerning our upcoming trial. While endorsing our actions, the renowned legal scholar and co-author of the UN report which squarely blames Israel of practicing The Crime of Apartheid had also stressed the urgency of global solidarity today more than ever. This is especially so as the West is increasingly trying to force Palestinians into surrender.

Richard Falk emphasized that,

“It seems to me important to present yourselves as actually engaged in German patriotism in a certain way. That you’re liberating Germany from its own dark past, because that’s what it really is. It really comes down to the understanding that if you want to get rid of antisemitism, you’ve got to begin to take criminality seriously wherever it occurs, and you can’t choose your criminals because of your history.”

The Crime of Apartheid is not a subjective reflection or a question of opinion but a legal matter. Israel has maintained an apartheid system since its inception, and we will continue to resist it by calling for equality, freedom and justice in Palestine – from the river to the see – until apartheid has been abolished. Opposition to supremacy may be the moral imperative of our time.

The “special relationship” between Israel and Germany apparently also means the coordinated slander campaign by German and Israeli media. Thus, they parroted the lies even though there is video evidence to the contrary, as if we were 20 activists, as if we attacked a Holocaust survivor, as if we referred to them as “Nazis”, while we were physically attacked and we were referred to as such. The rabid Simon Wiesenthal Center had also tried to bully the Berlin Mayor, Michael Müller, by threatening to place the mayor on a list of the top ten antisemites in the world, simply for “not doing enough against BDS” in the city.

At the same time that we are being taken to court by the German state, we are embraced by Danish lawmakers. Copenhagen’s Mayor for Technical and Environmental Affairs, Ninna Hedeager Olsen, has awarded us The Courage Award at a ceremony in Copenhagen’s City Hall on Feb 7th (full statement in English) for speaking up against Israeli apartheid.

We choose to challenge German complicity in Israeli criminal policies in Berlin of all places. Where, if not in Berlin, should we be able to speak up against such immoral and criminal practices? This is not only our duty as conscientious citizens of that land – privileged and underprivileged residents who are struggling together to bring about a better future – but it is also incumbent on us as humanists and as Berliners to do so.

The trial is on March 4, 2019, and we are ready to take Israel to court in Berlin.

Three human rights activists, two Israelis and a Palestinian, are facing trial in Berlin for disrupting a representative of the Israeli state and challenging her responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The incident took place in June 2017 as member of Israeli apartheid parliament and chair of the anti-BDS lobby, MK Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid), was hosted along with members of her party by the Deutsch-Israelische Gesellschaft at the Humboldt University in Berlin. A media frenzy soon ensued throughout German media, which included slander and outright lies, along with the outrageous claim as if this was an anti-Semitic incident.

Ronnie Barkan, Stavit Sinai and Majed Abusalama, two Israeli dissidents and a Palestinian survivor of several Israeli onslaughts on the besieged Gaza Strip, will soon be facing trial for carrying out their civil duty in their opposition to Israeli crimes against humanity. The legal proceedings will begin on March 4th, 2019, at 09:00, in front of Judge Miller at the Moabit Criminal Court.

Renowned legal scholar, former UN Special Rapporteur and co-author of the UN report “Israeli Practices towards the Palestinian People and the Question of Apartheid”, Prof. Richard Falk, had endorsed the three activists and discussed the moral imperative of their action during a recent event that took place in Berlin.

The general public and media are all invited to participate and report on the legal challenge in holding Israel accountable for practicing The Crime of Apartheid and numerous other violations.

Khalida Jarrar freed from Israeli prison after 20 months of administrative detention

Palestinian national leader, parliamentarian, feminist and leftist Khalida Jarrar was released from Israeli prison early Thursday morning, 28 February 2019, after 20 months of imprisonment without charge or trial under administrative detention. In an interview (video below with English subtitles) given immediately after her release, Jarrar said that “the prisoners are an integral part of the Palestinian people’s movement, and their message is always unity.”

She highlighted the conditions of Palestinian women prisoners as well as their role in the prisoners’ movement, urging attention to the conditions that they face in Damon prison after their transfer from HaSharon prison.

This video, with an interview by journalist Ali Samoudi, was filmed immediately after her release:

Jarrar’s family was told that she would be released from the Jalameh checkpoint around 12 noon, but instead she was released in the early morning at the Salem checkpoint west of Jenin. From there, she will visit the gravesite of her father in Nablus, who died during her imprisonment. She will be received at the Catholic Hall in Ramallah for a reception on Thursday night, to be followed by further receptions on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Jarrar’s daughter Yafa said on social media that the shifting of the time and place of her release was a deliberate attempt by the Israeli occupation to minimize celebrations of her release. “Israeli occupation forces just released Mom at 4:00 am (Jerusalem time) this morning at Salem checkpoint near Jenin, which is contrary to what they have informed us. Mom was informed that she would be release at 12:30 pm at Al-jalameh checkpoint near Nablus. Instead, they released Mom in the very early hours at a different location and let her walk free by herself in the middle of no where. In spite of Israel’s attempts to disrupt her reception, Mom is FREE!” she noted.

Jarrar has been imprisoned since 2 July 2017, held without charge or trial under administrative detention. Her administrative detention order was renewed four times, most recently on 25 October. Over 275 organizations, political parties and social movements around the world joined in a collective call for her release.

This is not the first time that Jarrar has been imprisoned by the Israeli occupation; her arrest in 2017 came only 13 months after she was released from Israeli prison after serving a 15-month sentence for her public political activity. After being arrested in 2015, she was ordered to administrative detention; in response to public outrage, she was transferred to the military courts for a bogus trial. During this most recent 20 months in prison, she remained jailed with no charges and no trial the entire time.

In an interview with Wattan TV, Jarrar noted the attacks of Israeli occupation minister of internal security and strategic affairs Gilad Erdan against the Palestinian prisoners. Erdan also directs the Israeli state’s global attacks on the BDS movement and Palestine solidarity campaigns internationally. “The situation of the women prisoners is not easy, especially after the Erdan decision to transfer them from the HaSharon prison to Damon prison as a punishment for them after a 63-day protest against the installation of surveillance cameras in the prison yard. This is part of an overall attack against the prisoners,” Jarrar said.

“The occupation is trying to transfer the prisoners to make them begin their struggle from a zero point, but the prisoners continue to maintain their unity and cohesion and demand a change in their circumstances. The prisoners’ rooms are filled with moisture, and the electrical installations are very dangerous because they are wet and prone to fires. There is a real danger and a complaint has been lodged with the prison administration,” Jarrar said. “In addition to the fact that the prison yards are full of cameras, there is no library for the prisoners and there is no kitchen. The prisoners have to cook inside the rooms filled with moisture.”

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network salutes Khalida Jarrar and the Palestinian people upon her release. Her steadfastness, leadership and clarity of vision is an inspiration to people around the world struggling for freedom. As International Women’s Day approaches, we celebrate the liberation of Khalida Jarrar and pledge to intensify our efforts to free all of the Palestinian women and men jailed by the Israeli occupation. We congratulate Khalida Jarrar on her freedom and pledge to continue on her path of struggle until the freedom of every Palestinian political prisoner behind bars, and the freedom of Palestine.

Samidoun Gothenburg organizes solidarity evening for Khalida Jarrar

The following is a translation of the Swedish original at
Samidoun Göteborg
:

On Wednesday, 20 January, Samidoun Gothenburg joined with others for a solidarity evening with the imprisoned Palestinian leader Khalida Jarrar. The evening began with a presentation about Jarrar’s case and why we, with many others, see her case as a symbol and a critical example for thousands of Palestinians detained each year by the Israeli occupation. After the presentation, various initiatives and opportunities for organizing in solidarity with the Palestinian liberation struggle were discussed.

Participants in the event took solidarity photos and wrote letters to Khalida Jarrar and other Palestinian prisoners, including Ahmad Sa’adat, who we recently organized a solidarity evening to support.

Remember: Khalida Jarrar is not yet free! The fact that her latest administrative detention order expires on 28 February is no guarantee that the Israeli prison authorities will release her, as administrative detention orders can be renewed indefinitely for up to 6 months at a time. Please see the contributions of our international comrades on the case of Khalida Jarrar and be inspired to organize your own solidarity actions!

If you were unable to join the event, Samidoun Gothenburg has provided Swedish-language downloadable materials:

Samidoun calls for the freedom of political prisoners in Egyptian jails

Translations: العربية | Dutch

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network condemned the executions carried out by the Egyptian regime against 9 Egyptian youths, calling for an end to the “systematic and continuous repression and killings by the fascist regime of General Abdel-Fattah Sisi.”

“What is happening in Egyptian prisons is systematic and documented torture. While this is widely known, it does not receive sufficient attention from international human rights bodies and legal institutions,” said Mohammed Khatib, the Europe coordinator of Samidoun. He referred to the “disgraceful collaboration between the so-called international community and the generals in Cairo.”

Khatib launched a scathing attack on the Egyptiann regime and what he called “the silence of the Egyptian and Arab parties who describe themselves as standing with the people. They say with words that they oppose the Camp David regime, but remain silent on the daily violations of the rights of tens of thousands of Egyptian prisoners in Egyptian jails by that same Camp David regime.”

He pointed out “the perpetrators of torture and killings that took place in the prison known as ‘Scorpio’ (the Tora prison complex) and other jails and prisons have not been held accountable for their crimes. As a result, this only encouraged further repression and organized state terror on the part of the generals.”

The steadfastness of political prisoners in the jails of the Arab reactionary, dictatorial regimes stems from the deep and absolute conviction and reality in the interdependence and linking of the struggle of the national and social movements in the Arab world with the struggle of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian prisoners, which is the spearhead of the liberation cause,” said Khatib. “The crimes perpetrated by the Camp David regime against the poor and the oppressed in Egypt cannot be separatedfrom the crimes of the Zionist enemy and imperialist powers in the world, because of the Egyptian state’s dependence on these same imperialist forces. These powers see these regimes as a tool to destroy popular movements in order to further plunder and steal the resources of the Arab peoples.”

He called on activists and friends of the Samidoun Network internationally to stand with political prisoners in Egyptian jails and advocate and organize against the executions while working for the release of all Egyptian prisoners.

Take Action: Support SFSU Struggle Against Zionism and Racism

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network urges supporters and friends of Palestine and the prisoners to take action by signing the online petition against racism at San Francisco State University (SFSU). The University is a frequent site of struggle in which Palestinian students and faculty, as well as other marginalized communities, have been attacked by Zionist campaigns that have met with little serious response from SFSU administrators. Departments like AMED (Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas) studies have been underfunded and unsupported by the University, even in violation of signed agreements.

Most recently, the university issued a document listing “religious holidays” that may be observed by students and other members of the University community. Shockingly, “Israel Independence Day” was included on this list despite the fact that it is not a religious holiday and – much more significantly – is essentially a celebration of the Nakba, the expulsion of over 750,000 Palestinian refugees from their homes and lands by armed Zionist settler colonial forces. Today numbering in the millions, Palestinian refugees have been denied their right to return for over 71 years. Adding insult to injury, the list also omitted major significant Muslim holidays, including Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, despite the fact that they are widely recognized by members of the SFSU community as well as nearly 2 billion Muslims around the world.

Concerned SFSU community members will be bringing the issue to the Academic Senate on Tuesday, 19 February at 2 pm PST. Please sign the online petition so that your support can be heard at the meeting!

The undersigned students, staff, faculty, administrators, alumni and concerned community members are outraged at the SFSU administration’s racism and Islamophobia evident in the recent list of so-called “religious holidays” adopted by the university.

SFSU listed “Israel Independence Day” as a religious holiday for Judaism. A religious holiday is a day set aside for religious observance. The 1948 date is no such religious holiday and in fact marks the Nakba — the forcible displacement of over 750,000 Palestinians through terror and paramilitary attacks on civilian villages and cities. Millions of Palestinian refugees have been denied the right to return to their home for nearly 71 years by Israel. A consensus among historians, including Israelis, confirms this history and rejects the nonsensical claims of voluntary departure put forth by Israeli propagandists. Designating Palestinian dispossession as a celebration can only be understood as declaration of anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab racism. Making a religious day out of it is even worse. This is also an affront to SFSU’s Jewish students, faculty, staff and community members who have been outspoken in their refusal to allow Israeli colonialism, occupation and apartheid to speak for them.

To add insult to injury, the same SFSU calendar of religious observances omits Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr, two major holidays celebrated by almost 2 billion Muslims. SFSU has since revised the list though it remains inaccurate and without addressing its pro-Israel bias. The combination of these two elements in one document, and waiting for a whole week to address one element albeit inaccurately while ignoring the other, highlights the atmosphere of discrimination faced by Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students, faculty, staff and community members. Combined with increased policing and harassment of students, faculty and staff, this toxic environment poses a threat to all indigenous communities, communities of color and other marginalized communities engaged in social justice struggles at the university.

This offensive list of religious holidays is not an isolated incident. It comes amid ongoing incidents of racism and Islamophobia at SFSU, including the refusal to take action on the posting of racist materials around campus attacking the General Union of Palestinian Students, other student organizations and faculty members, including Prof. Rabab Abdulhadi; the refusal to respond to racist attacks on the AMED Studies program; the refusal to fund the AMED Studies program; and a number of other major incidents that reflect institutional racism, white supremacy and Islamophobia. In this highly alarming context, the administration’s excuse of having simply borrowed this discriminatory list of holidays from another university rings particularly hollow. As a university that presents itself as a social justice-oriented institution, SFSU should be especially attentive to the needs of the communities it serves.

We demand the following:

1. An immediate, substantive, unequivocal and meaningful apology from the university and a retraction of the circulated document.

2. A full, transparent and open investigation into the circumstances surrounding the creation and distribution of the “religious holidays” document and other incidents of racism and discrimination on campus. This investigation must be independent of the university administration. It must include, but not be limited to, the release of public records related to the drafting of this document and the process involved in its approval and distribution.

3. Comprehensive training on civil rights and discrimination for all SFSU management and administration. The trainers must be jointly selected by the affected communities and must exclude any organizations involved in racist and Islamophobic attacks on targeted communities at SFSU or elsewhere.

4. Reinstate the AMED program’s faculty lines and hire additional tenure track faculty to allow the program to become independent, stable and viable university-wide institute. Further provide appropriate administrative staff and operating budget and respect the program’s right to self-determination. This is an important structural remedy to educate the campus as a whole on issues related to Arab, Muslim and Palestinian communities in coordination with other indigenous communities, communities of color and marginalized communities, including our Jewish sisters and brothers who are equally insulted by the continued attempt of Israel apologists to claim that Israel and Zionism speak for all Jews and own Jewishness.

5. End the SFSU police state that is turning a campus with a history of social justice struggle into a business-oriented model that is unsuitable for a public academic institution and is harmful to students, faculty and staff.

We cannot be silent in the face of the latest U.S. aggression against the Venezuelan people. Nicolás Maduro is the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, chosen twice by the people as part of an internationally observed electoral process. Since the 1998 election of Hugo Chávez, the United States has been relentless in its pursuit of regime change in Venezuela. With Donald Trump in the White House, these efforts have escalated to threats of all-out military violence, the plundering of billions of dollars in wealth from the Venezuelan people and pushing a multitude of outrageous lies in the global media.

For hundreds of years, the U.S. has waged war against the people of the world through coups, invasions and economic warfare. Juan Guaidó is a U.S. puppet. He is not a representative of the Venezuelan masses. The idea that a person can swear themselves in as president at a rally in the interest of “defending democracy” is laughable. The right wing in Venezuela claim the Bolivarian elections are rigged because they refuse to participate in them. Instead they engage in voter intimidation using violence reminiscent of Jim Crow terrorism against African-Americans in the Deep U.S. South.

U.S.-led sanctions and currency manipulation are responsible for the suffering in Venezuela. Marco Rubio and right-wing media guide the Venezuelan opposition from Miami. The U.S. cannot stand for any country on the planet to enjoy its natural wealth or the fruits of its labor independent of Wall Street and the Pentagon. Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world and is rich in gold and other mineral wealth. Iraq war architect John Bolton said that regime change in Venezuela would be a tremendous opportunity to gain more profits for Wall Street. We believe him.

Since the Bolivarian Revolution in 1998, massive strides have been taken to uplift the working class, Afro-Venezuelans and Indigenous populations in Venezuela. The working poor have made tremendous gains because the government implemented policies and passed laws to fight racism, sexism, homophobia and economic inequality. Despite sanctions and sabotage, Venezuela has maintained a transparent and democratic system through many elections. Venezuela provides aid to struggling people worldwide through subsidized fuel and by leading the way with progressive labor laws. Their gains are part of the global struggle waged by workers and the oppressed against the wealthiest and most powerful capitalists on the planet.

Therefore, we demand:

The U.S. immediately cease all hostile actions against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela — lift all sanctions, stop backing a coup, cease efforts to destroy the Venezuelan economy and respect the right of the Venezuelan people to self-determination. All countries involved in the plunder of Venezuelan wealth immediately return what they have stolen to the democratically elected government of Venezuela and its people.Wall Street must immediately pay reparations to the Venezuelan people for their suffering under genocidal sanctions and currency manipulation.

In the internationalist and liberatory spirit of Simón Bolívar, we pledge to mobilize and fight on the side of Venezuela’s right to sovereignty, understanding that the gains won under the Bolivarian Revolution are gains for all the world’s workers and oppressed.

Sign on to the statement and get involved to demand: U.S. hands off Venezuela!

20 February, Gothenburg: Solidarity Evening for Khalida Jarrar

Wednesday, 20 February
5:30 pm
Andra Långgatan 20
Gothenburg, Sweden
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/370810717035905/

For more information about Khalida Jarrar and her captivity, please read the article from our international comrades in the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network from last autumn: https://samidoun.net/2018/10/palestinian-leader-khalida-jarrars-imprisonment-without-charge-or-trial-extended-again/

Our meeting is organized as part of an international solidarity campaign for the release of Khalida Jarrar and all Palestinian prisoners. Join and be part of the international campaign! Can’t attend our solidarity evening? Organize your own meetings and actions, write to local and international officials, send greetings to Palestinian prisoners or simply share information or a picture of you and a sign with Khalida Jarrar’s name in social media. And of course: Join the international movement to boycott Israel. All contributions matter, and everyone can participate in the solidarity movement with the Palestinian liberation struggle!
