6 December, Gothenburg: Film Screening – “Imprisoning a Generation”

Thursday, 6 December
5:30 pm
Hagabion
Linnegatan 21
Gothenburg, Sweden
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1105584919624178/

Samidoun Gothenburg will be screening the film, “Imprisoning a Generation,” at Hagabion!

Every year, Israel imprisons between 500 and 700 Palestinian children as young as 12 years of age, and this year alone, the occupying power has already detained 908 children under 18. At the time of writing, 5580 Palestinians are in prison or administrative custody, and among these are 250 children. In addition, Israel’s occupying forces have already murdered 44 children so far thie year. This information is accessible through the efforts of groups like Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, Defense for Children International – Palestine, the International Solidarity Network and Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network. Follow these groups to support the Palestinian people and the Palestinian children in their struggle for liberation from imperialist settler-colonial violence.

The documentary “Imprisoning a Generation” follows four young Palestinians, Moataz, Marwan, Nooran and Shadi, who have been arrested and imprisoned by the Israeli military apparatus. Their perspectives, together with their families’ voices, provide an insight into the intertwined structures of oppression that extend far beyond the prison walls. Read more about the movie and check out a trailer here: http://www.anemoia.net/ . The movie is 50 minutes long, is partially subtitled in English and contains violent scenes.

Afterwards, there will be a chance to discuss the content and how we can organize ourselves in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners and the Palestinian Liberation movement. In addition, there will be the opportunity to write letters to Palestinians who are imprisoned and also to contribute solidarity photos to campaigns for Palestinian prisoners’ release.

NOTE! Come on time Late entry can not be guaranteed. If you come early, you can if you want to hang out with others waiting to watch the film.

OBS! Kom i god tid! Sent insläpp kan inte garanteras. Kommer du istället för tidigt så kan du om du vill umgås med andra som väntar på att bli insläppta till filmen.

Come to the Palestine Working Group’s last event of the semester and the last one by the 2018 Board. We’ll be screening Dan Cohen and Max Blumenthal’s unforgettable documentary film, Killing Gaza. Dan and Max will Skype in to comment and take any questions by the audience. Joe Catron, a journalist/activist who lived in Gaza for three and a half years from 2011 to 2014, will join us in person to offer his reflections on the film and his time being on the ground.

From the official website:
“In Killing Gaza, independent journalists Max Blumenthal and Dan Cohen documented Israel’s 2014 war on Gaza.

Yet this film is much more than a documentary about Palestinian resilience and suffering. It is a chilling visual document of war crimes committed by the Israeli military, featuring direct testimony and evidence from the survivors.”

Stop the Criminalization of Resistance!

Stop Criminalizing People Who Struggle for their Rights to Land, Income, Shelter, Dignity, and a Just Peace!

Join the Alliance for People’s Health and the International League of Peoples Struggles on Coast Salish Territory on Monday December 10 to share messages of solidarity with people in struggle, and hear first hand reports from peoples struggles for justice and liberation across Turtle Island, Philippines, India, Palestine, Nicaragua, and more. Stand for Human Rights with Justice!

In the Philippines, since July 2016, hundreds of peasant leaders, health workers, journalists, lawyers, and human rights advocates have been killed under President Rodrigo Duterte’s counterinsurgency program Oplan Kapayapaan. Despite promises of fundamental change, the militarization of poor peasant communities and extra-judicial killings of leaders and activists in mass organizations intensifies. . Additionally, the death toll in Duterte’s drug war continues to climb. The war on drugs targets majority urban poor who live under conditions of extreme exploitation.

The situation in the Philippines is not unique. As the plunder of resources and the exploitation of working people intensifies, peasants, Indigenous peoples, and workers, including journalists and health workers, continue to struggle for their rights! From the Philippines and Palestine to Turtle Island and Latin America, the people continue to rise for a just and lasting peace that includes genuine land reform, the right of return to occupied territories, an adequate livelihood, and an end to environmentally destructive industries that plunder the land to enrich an elite minority. Those who raise their voices in the struggle for their communities’ fundamental human rights continue to face grave repression and even the loss of life by pro-imperialist states and military and paramilitary forces.

TAKE ACTION for Human Rights:

1. Follow and share the Facebook Event page, there will be new posts everyday starting on December 1 covering important human rights issues from communities in struggle.

2. Make a cash donation to the Kagawasan! Liberation Campaign for Justice and Human Rights on Negros Island, Philippines. Message: kagawasanliberation@gmail.com

3. Join local the Alliance for People’s Health and other ILPS member-organizations and participate in the anti-imperialist struggle to defend and expand human rights and stand in solidarity with human rights defenders.

Why December 10th? December 10th is recognized across the world as a day to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1848. The basic tenants of this international statute establish an individuals economic, social, and cultural rights, including the “the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services.” Forty-eight countries are original signatories to the declaration, including Canada, the United States, India, the Philippines, and Mexico, committing themselves to securing fundamental human rights for their citizens.

Call to Action: Ten Years since the Holy Land Five #10YearsTooLong

The following statement was co-authored by the Palestinian Youth Movement, the daughters of the Holy Land Five, and the Coalition for Civil Freedoms on the 10th year anniversary of the Holy Land Five’s unjust convictions. Below the statement is our call to action. It is republished here from the PYM website; Samidoun is an endorser of this important statement and call to action.

Ten years ago today, five Palestinian-Americans who were pillars of their communities were convicted on false charges of “providing material support for terrorism.” They ran the largest Muslim charity in the United States, the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF). As George W. Bush waged the domestic “War on Terror,” in December 2001, he designated the HLF as a “terrorist” organization, stating that the government would seize their assets and close them down. The U.S. government acknowledged that all financial support HLF sent to Palestine went to charities that support widows and orphans living under Israeli occupation, and were the same ones that the U.S. government itself sent money to. Not a single dollar was used for any violent activities, yet five key members of the HLF—Shukri Abu Baker, Ghassan Elashi, Mohammed El-Mezain, Mufid Abdulqader, and Abdulrahman Odeh, known as the Holy Land Foundation 5 (HLF5)—were unjustly convicted in 2008.

The HLF trial is considered the largest “terrorism” financing case in U.S. history, and yet prosecutors did not argue that the charity or any of its officials funded any violence. Instead, they told jurors that the schools, hospitals, and social welfare programs the charity sent money to were under Hamas’ control. Since money is “fungible,” prosecutors argued that those donations freed up other funds for Hamas to use in violent attacks. The irony is that these same Palestinian charities also received donations from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which is funded by the U.S. government and the International Red Cross.

After failing to convict them in the first trial, the case was retried. It featured the testimony of an anonymous Israeli intelligence agent whom the defense team was unable to adequately question— the first time in legal history that a court had allowed an expert witness to testify under anonymity. An outfit run by notorious Islamophobe, Steven Emerson, the Investigative Project on Terrorism, supplied fabricated testimony central to the criminalization and indictment of the HLF5. They were given sentences of up to 65 years in prison, and were put in Communication Management Units (CMUs), often dubbed the “Gitmo North” due to the severity and discriminatory nature of their conditions.

The closure of the HLF and the conviction of its five most prominent members was meant to have a chilling effect on the Muslim and Arab communities in this country and to hinder their ability to mobilize around social justice issues, such as Palestinian self-determination. The case was one of the most egregious attempts by the government to stretch the definition of “material support for terrorism,” going as far as vilifying legitimate charitable works. This strategy is part of a long tradition of the U.S. government using incarceration to criminalize black and immigrant communities and to silence political activism and dissent.

Today, we continue to honor the HLF5, to fight for justice on their behalf, and on behalf of the other political prisoners that languish in the U.S. prison system as an attempt to intimidate and further marginalize our communities. We affirm that the only reason the HLF5 were targeted by the U.S. government is because their mission was explicitly rooted in community empowerment and worked to alleviate the conditions caused by Israeli settler-colonialism in Palestine. We stand by the HLF5, their families and their communities, and salute their struggle in their firm resistance against Zionist repression and aggression in all its forms. We stand by their work and will continue to build institutions that serve our community as part of our larger commitment to the Palestinian national liberation movement.

19 December, Montreal: Sovereignty is not terrorism

Wednesday, 19 December
6:00 pm
Location TBA
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/189002242039896/

Since the war on terror, the imperialist powers have been pushing for confusion between national liberation struggles and terrorist groups. Even though this is a strategy watch, since September 11, rhetoric is used even more frequently. If the legitimate Colombian-Irish resistance against the imperialist system was framed in the war on drugs, and all the militants of these movements accused of drug trafficking, the trend has now become that of false accusations of terrorism.

The so-called “Canada” has a list of terrorist entities, just like the United States. These two lists are important tools for international collaboration in the persecution and political repression of groups and individuals who advocate for self-determination and socialism.

Come hear how the movements for Irish, Palestinian, Filipino and Aboriginal sovereignty resist colonialism, imperialism and the political repression of the Canadian state and the United States and how you can help these movements to unmask the true terrorists: the imperialist countries that destroy our world and our economy in the name of profit.
