On 15 May 2014, an Israeli Border Police officer took aim at Nadim Nuwara and pulled the trigger of his M16 rifle.

The live bullet struck Nuwara, 17, in the chest and exited through his back, killing him at the scene. CCTV cameras captured the shooting, allowing for detailed forensic video, sound and spatial analysis to be used to identify Nuwara’s killer. Despite seemingly clear evidence, systemic impunity for Israeli military violence continues to be an obstacle to justice for Palestinian families living under prolonged military occupation like the Nuwaras.

Palestinian Human Rights Defender Abdullah Abu Rahma arrested and detained

On Friday the 13^th of May 2016, the internationally recognized human rights defender and coordinator of the Bil’in popular committee against the wall and settlements, Abdullah Abu Rahma, was arrested during the Alwada Cycling Marathon, which took place in the West Bank Friday. Abdullah Abu Rahma is currently still being held under detention by the Israeli military and his case will be brought to the military court in Ofer Military Base tomorrow.

Abu Rahma, who is from the West Bank village Bil’in, was arrested, after the Alwada Cycling Marathon had reached Bil’in. After reaching Bil’in the attending cyclists where met by approximately 150 heavily armed soldiers, who immediately started showering the cyclists with tear gas and blocked the road, where their route was going. Doing this attack of the peaceful demonstrating cyclists, Abu Rahma was arrest along with an international activist from Israel. The Israeli activist was released shortly after her arrest.

The Alwada Cycling Marathon’s intention was to demonstrate against the illegal Israeli occupation and the apartheid system, that Israel is enforcing on the Palestinians through a healthy and peaceful cycling route from Ramallah to Bil’in. By Israeli Forces attacking the peaceful demonstration and arresting Abu Rahma, they once again show the world, that they do not accept the right to protest peacefully and that they do not apply to the international law, that does not allow Israeli Forces to be on Palestinian controlled areas, which the area of Bil’in is.

Abu Rahma is an important activist for the village of Bil’in and a symbol of peaceful resistance all over the West Bank. For now, he is left waiting for his next sentence, after he has already been imprisoned for his non violent resistance multiple times, and has in the past been charged with both “incitement” and “organizing and participating in an illegal demonstration”. Till now, there has not been declared a charge against him in the current case, but the military court will determine his fate , after having hold him in detention for 4 days, even though he did not commit any crime what so ever.

Please spread this message as wide as possible and put pressure on the Israeli Justice system for his release through media attention or presence in the military court.

Sami Janazrah suspends hunger strike, Majdi Yassin ends strike

On Wednesday, 11 May, Sami Janazrah, Palestinian prisoner held in Israeli administrative detention without charge or trial, announced that he was suspending his hunger strike for seven days subject to the outcome of the investigation for one week being engaged in by the military prosecutor following Tuesday’s Israeli supreme court hearing.

Janazrah said, through the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, that during that time he will consume only liquids. He stated that if his administrative detention is resumed after the week, he will return to his hunger strike, which he conducted for 69 days.

Late Tuesday, 10 May, Majdi Yassin, 33, a Palestinian and Swedish citizen who has been on hunger strike since his arrest at the border crossing with Jordan on 26 April while returning to Sweden, also announced that he is ending his hunger strike; he is being transferred to a prison and his interrogation ended. He will be brought before a military court next Tuesday.

Several other Palestinian prisoners, including Fouad Assi, Adib Mafarjeh, Muhannad Al-Azzeh, and Mohammed Qawasmeh, remain on hunger strike in protest of their imprisonment without charge or trial, isolation, or medical neglect. Mansour Moqtada, a seriously ill Palestinian prisoner permanently held in Ramle prison clinic, is continuing his liquid-only fast; the Palestinian Prisoners’ Commission is pursuing a demand for his early release on medical grounds. Moqtada is serving a life sentence; he was gravely injured by Israeli occupation forces in 2002 when he was arrested.

Barghouthi ordered to two months in administrative detention by Ofer military court

Palestinian astrophysicist Imad Barghouthi was ordered to two months in administrative detention without charge or trial by the Israeli Ofer military court on Wednesday, 11 May, reported the Palestinian Prisoners Society. Barghouthi, whose case has drawn the support of prominent scientists and academics around the world, was originally ordered to three months in administrative detention by military order.

While Israeli administrative detention is without charge or trial and on the basis of secret evidence, Jawad Boulos, Barghouthi’s lawyer, said that his detention was over Facebook postings. Barghouthi, 54, a professor at Al-Quds University and a former employee of NASA in the United States, was detained in late April by Israeli occupation forces at a checkpoint in Nabi Saleh.

Boulos stated that they would be appealing Barghouthi’s detention. He is among 750 Palestinians imprisoned without charge or trial under administrative detention; 150 Palestinians have been arrested over social media postings. On Monday, 9 May, Majd Atwan, a 22-year-old Palestinian woman, was sentenced to 45 days imprisonment for Facebook postings. Palestinian journalist Sami al-Saee, reporter with Al-Fajr TV from Tulkarem, was accused on Wednesday, 11 May, of “incitement” for posting on Facebook; he will have a military court hearing on 15 May, in which the military prosecution has demanded a nine-month sentence. Al-Saee has been imprisoned since 9 March without charge, among 19 Palestinian journalists in Israeli prisons.

Scientists and academics open letter: Free Imad Ahmad Barghouthi

Imad Barghouthi, a professor of theoretical space plasma physics at Al-Quds University, has been arrested by Israeli occupation forces and ordered to administrative detention without charge or trial. Barghouthi, whose previous detention without charge inspired demands for his freedom from academics around the world, is once again finding support from internationally known scientists and academics. European organizations and academics sent a letter to the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, urging action on Barghouthi’s case.

Today, over 100 renowned academics, including Angela Davis, Freeman Dyson, Noam Chomsky, and David Mumford, have issued a statement and an open letter urging Barghouthi’s release. We urge all academics to join the open letter and sign on at http://jvp.org/freeimad/.

Dear Prime Minister Netanyahu:

We are writing to urge you to order the immediate release of Dr. Imad Ahmad Barghouthi from Israeli military custody.

Dr. Barghouthi, a Palestinian resident of the West Bank, is an astrophysicist and professor of physics at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem. He was reportedly arrested by Israeli soldiers at the military checkpoint at Nabi Saleh in the West Bank, northwest of Ramallah on 24 April 2016. The Times of Israel reported that “neither the IDF nor Israel Police would comment on the matter, and it remains unclear which branch of the Israeli security forces was responsible for his arrest.” The Palestine Information Center reported that on 2 May 2016, “An Israeli court … issued an administrative detention order against Professor Barghouthi ” [1]. Professor Barghouthi is being held without charge [2], a serious violation of human rights.

As described in the journal Nature, Professor Barghouthi was previously arrested without charge by Israeli Border Police on 6 December 2014 when he attempted to cross the border from the West Bank to Jordan to board a flight to the United Arab Emirates so that he could attend a meeting of the Arab Union of Astronomy and Space Sciences, an organization he helped to found [3].

Professor Barghouthi’s attorney at that time, Jawad Boulos, alleged that Dr. Barghouthi was arrested because of his statements in support of Palestinian activities during Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip the previous summer, and that during interrogations Dr. Barghouthi was asked what statements he wrote on Facebook and what he said on television in opposition to the Israeli occupation [3]. Following letters of protest from international scientific organizations, including the Committee of Concerned Scientists in the United States, Dr. Barghouthi was released on 22 January 2015 [4].

The re-arrest of Professor Barghouthi is part of a broader pattern of disruption and suppression of Palestinian educational systems. The University of Gaza has been bombed multiple times [5]. Birzeit University in the West Bank has been closed down at least 15 times by the Israeli military, and its former president, Dr. Hanna Nasir, a physicist, was deported and remained in exile for 19 years. Arrests of faculty and students, in some cases because of Facebook posts in opposition to military occupation, have continued into 2016 [6]. Israel has destroyed or damaged hundreds of Palestinian schools, even kindergartens [7].

Article 26 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which Israel is a signatory, grants all people the right to education. We urge you henceforth to respect those principles and to order the immediate release of Professor Imad Barghouthi.

A little over two months ago, all of you supporters helped Rasmea and her defense committee win a huge victory, as the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals sent her case back to trial judge Gershwin Drain, saying he had wrongfully barred the testimony of a torture expert that was critical to the defense. At the trial, Rasmea was not allowed to tell the entire story of her arrest and forced confession by the Israelis in Palestine in 1969, when she endured over three weeks of vicious sexual, physical, and psychological torture at the hands of the Israeli military.

Rasmea suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) because of this torture, which, according to world renowned psychologist, Dr. Mary Fabri, caused her to suppress the horrible recollection of the arrest when she answered questions on her immigration application in the U.S. These allegedly false answers led to her unjust conviction in the politically-motivated trial in 2014, which in turn led to her being sentenced last year to 18 months in prison and deportation. She is currently living and working in Chicago, free while fighting the conviction.

Judge Drain excluded Dr. Fabri’s testimony from the trial, and disallowed any evidence about the rape and torture. Now, after the appeals court decision, the judge must determine new legal avenues to exclude the expert testimony. If he cannot, Rasmea may be granted a new trial!

Daughter of imprisoned Palestinian astrophysicist speaks out on her father’s case

Mondoweiss published an interview with Duha Barghouthi, a high school student and the daughter of imprisoned Palestinian astrophysicist Imad Barghouthi, by Samidoun international coordinator Charlotte Kates. Barghouthi, 54, is a former employee of NASA in the United States and a professor at Al-Quds University. Scientists and academics around the world have called from his release from Israeli prison, where he is held under administrative detention without charge or trial:

“Imad is the source of love and kindness in our house. He is very joyful and he spreads positivity wherever he goes,” says Duha Barghouthi, 17, Imad’s daughter and a graduating high school student. “He used to help me – and my twin sister – in our homework and exams. Unfortunately, as seniors, we are in the middle of our final exams. Passing our exams without him next to us as we study and prepare has impacted us negatively.”

“My father teaches and plants concepts and ideas of freedom through education to his students, his children, and his colleagues,” Duha said, emphasizing her father’s commitment to Palestinian science….She urged international scientists to support her father’s case. “Scientists should be awarded, not imprisoned. I know there are already organizations that are concerned with such cases,” Duha said. “But I urge them to do more legally. My father isn’t the only scientist who has been persecuted by the Israeli occupation. There is a war on Palestinian education. I hope to see Israel held accountable for its cruel actions on an international level.”

She noted the work of organizations and prominent international academics, mathematicians and scientists who have spoken up to urge Barghouthi’s freedom. “My father is fortunate enough to have made an international reputation for himself academically. People all over the world are speaking up for him, but what he would like most is for people to speak up for all Palestinian prisoners.”

“George Jackson in the Sun of Palestine” is a travelling multimedia exhibition that expresses the depth of solidarity and closeness between the struggles against colonization in Palestine and around the world. In this regard the exhibit will change with each location as local artists join the exhibit.

The impetus and title for the exhibit stem from the inspiration Black Panther George Jackson received from Palestinian poet Samih al-Qasim’s poem “Enemy of the Sun.” After Jackson was assassinated in 1971 a handwritten copy of this poem was found in his prison cell. The Black Panther Party shared the classical Palestinian poem in the party’s newspaper, under the assumption it was written by Jackson himself.

Curator Greg Thomas states:

“That was a magical mistake that expressed the depth of solidarity and closeness, because the similarity in voice and situation is unimaginable. Palestinian resistance poetry occupied a large space in the lives of black people across the ocean and it is all because of George Jackson, the eternal enemy of the sun’s enemy.”

Israeli court delays review of Janazrah’s detention; hunger strike continues

The Israeli supreme court continued the administrative detention without charge or trial of Sami Janazrah on Tuesday, 10 May. Janazrah is a Palestinian prisoner who has been on hunger strike for 69 days, reported the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society.

Palestinian lawyer Jawad Boulos said that the court gave the military prosecution 7 days to present the results of their investigation of the evidence; he is held at Soroka hospital. He has been imprisoned under administrative detention since 15 November 2015.

Earlier on Tuesday, Janazrah refused a meeting with the representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) when Israeli guards insisted that his hands and feet remain shackled to the hospital bed during the meeting.

Ofer military court also rejected on Tuesday, 10 May an appeal of administrative detention by Adib Mafarjah. The lawyer of Mafarjah, on hunger strike for 37 days alongside Fouad Assi, both held under administrative detention without charge or trial, raised an alert about Mafarjah’s health. He is held in solitary confinement in Gilboa prison. His lawyer said that he has been vomiting blood and experiencing pain; he is refusing vitamins and medical examinations.

Meanwhile, Assi, also on hunger strike for 37 days, was transferred again to isolation in Ashkelon prison. He had previously been held in solitary confinement in Ella prison and before that in solitary confinement in the Ketziot Negev prison. Assi has been imprisoned since 9 August 2015. Riyad al-Ashqar of the Palestinian Prisoners Center for Studies said that the frequent transfer of hunger strikers was meant to pressure prisoners to end their strike through increasing their suffering.
