March 13, Washington DC: Fundraiser for Rasmea Odeh

Fundraiser for Rasmea Odeh
Friday, March 13 – 7:30 pm – 1 am
Emergence Community Arts Collective, 733 Euclid St NW, Washington DC

Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/785634374863657

An evening to celebrate the resilience of Palestinian Community Leader Rasmea Odeh and raise funds for her legal defense fund on March 13, 2015. The DC Palestinian Film & Arts Festival will screen “Women in Struggle” a remarkable and powerful film by Buthina Canaan Khoury that chronicles the struggles of Palestinian women imprisoned by Israel. The screening will be followed by our Dance for Freedom, an evening to share music and art.

**All Proceeds Will Go Directly to Rasmea’s Legal Defense Fund**

As a community leader from Chicago, Rasmea Odeh has been has been at the forefront of Palestinian activism for decades. She was indicted in October for allegedly falsifying information on her immigration application in support of her US citizenship. The attack on Rasmea was made based on information obtained through torture at the hands of Israel nearly 20 years ago. Although the prosecutor was allowed to present Israeli evidence, Rasmea’s defense team was prohibited from entering any evidence in her defense from that time. After an unfair trial, the court found her guilty of the charges.

After almost a month in solitary confinement, Rasmea was released on a $50,000 cash bond to return for sentencing March 12. Her struggle is not over and her DC community would like to show our support by fundraising for her legal defense team.

So come out and share an evening dedicated to the celebration of a culture of resilience and strength in the face of injustice.

A conversation with Rasmea Odeh on political repression, Palestine, and the targeting of her by the US Federal government. Find out ways to plug into the local defense committee.

As part of a week of action, the Rasmea Defense Committee is organizing 2 live-stream events. One in Chicago on February 13th and another in San Francisco on February 19th.

FORMAT
The first hour will be a presentation by Rasmea followed by questions and answers. We will then transition into a facilitated discussion about next steps for the Bay Area Rasmea Defense Committee.

JUSTICE 4 RASMEA
Protests, speaking events, and fundraisers are being organized across the U.S. as part of the growing national movement to win justice for Rasmea Odeh. A new website, justice4rasmea.org, will serve as an information clearinghouse and organizing resource for the growing campaign. This is a critical time, as Odeh will appear in court on March 12 for a sentencing hearing, where she faces up to 10 years in prison and deportation.

Odeh is a 67-year-old Palestinian community leader in Chicago. In November 2014, hundreds gathered for every day of her week-long trial in Detroit, where she was unjustly convicted on charges of Unlawful Procurement of Naturalization, for allegedly giving untruthful answers on her application for U.S. citizenship over a decade ago. The case was initially brought based on her 1969 arrest in Palestine by Israeli Occupation Forces. She was sexually assaulted and tortured into a false confession, and that conviction by the Israelis in 1970 was used against her in the U.S. case.

Odeh’s supporters say the Detroit verdict was unfair, largely because of decisions by federal Judge Gershwin Drain, who allowed the Israeli conviction into evidence, but did not allow her legal team to present the rape, torture, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This and more will be the basis of her appeal of the conviction, a notice of which will be filed immediately after the March 12 sentencing hearing.

Dozens of letters from faith and labor leaders, national civil rights organizations, community based institutions, academics, and public intellectuals have been written to Judge Drain, asking him to allow Odeh to remain free pending the appeal. Her lead attorney, Michael Deutsch, stated, “Rasmea is entitled to an appeal bond under the law because her case has meritorious legal issues to be decided by a higher court.”

Starting today, as part of a national week of action to defend Odeh, events will take place in Minneapolis, Seattle, New York City, Dallas, Tampa, Salt Lake City, Milwaukee, Tucson, Grand Rapids, the Bay Area, Washington DC, and other cities (comprehensive list here). Some of the events will feature a live stream speech by Odeh, a chance for her to address audiences in cities across the country, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CST (7:30 pm EST) Friday, Feb. 13. Additional live streams have been added for Sunday, Feb. 15 (3:00 pm EST) and Thursday, Feb. 19 (6:00 pm PST).

Activists from across the Midwest plan to join Odeh in Detroit for the March 12 hearing. In the meantime, several events are planned to raise funds to support the appeal, including Rock for Rasmea in Minneapolis, and one of which was organized by Students for Justice in Palestine last week.

Call to Action: Free Lina Khattab

UPDATED February 17: Lina Khattab was sentenced to six months imprisonment, a 6000 NIS ($1500 USD) fine, and three years probation by the Israeli military court on February 16. All materials below are updated to reflect Lina’s current situation. Please continue to demand her immediate release!

Palestinian student Lina Khattab, 18 years old and a first-year media student at Bir Zeit University, was sentenced by an Israeli military court to six months imprisonment, a 6000 NIS ($1500 USD) fine and three years probation, after her arrest by Israeli occupation forces during a student protest to free Palestinian political prisoners.

Free Lina Khattab Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/FreeLina/

FreeLinaLina is also a folkloric dancer with the world-renowned El-Funoun Popular Palestinian Dance Troupe and is active with cultural and political student activities at the University. She was charged with “throwing stones” and “participating in an unlawful demonstration,” two charges frequently used by the Israeli military against Palestinians who participate in public protests against the military occupation. She was sentenced by Israeli military courts, reserved for Palestinians under occupation, which have a 99.74% conviction rate.

Earlier, on January 12, she was denied bail at a hearing in which the military judge said, “looking at her, I can see the characteristics of a leader.”  Active Palestinian students frequently face arrest and imprisonment for their campus activities, including involvement in student union elections, student protests, and campus activist organizations and student government blocs.

Lina reported through her lawyer that she had been abused and beaten by Israeli soldiers during her detention, and one of the soldiers hit her, ripped her clothes and shouted obscene insults at her. She has been denied family visits since her arrest.

Lina is our sister and our comrade: a Palestinian young woman, student activist, imprisoned for participating in a popular demonstration for justice under occupation and apartheid.

Please join us in taking action to demand Lina’s freedom:

  1. Take a picture or short video of yourself, your friends or your student group with a sign, “Free Lina Khattab!” “Free Palestinian student Lina Khattab!” Send it to freelinakhattab@gmail.com or post it to the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/FreeLina/
  2. Hold a protest or demonstration at an Israeli consulate or mission in your area to demand freedom for Lina Khattab, or join an existing protest and carry signs demanding Lina’s freedom. Please send pictures, reports or facebook links to your events and actions!
  3. Hold a campus event – a discussion, tabling session or banner drop – to support student activist Lina Khattab and build international solidarity among student and youth movements for Lina’s freedom.

Palestinian American activist Rasmea Odeh has been targeted by the FBI to punish her for the work she has done for the Palestinian community. Last November she was convicted of felonies for errors on years old immigration paperwork. Now she is awaiting sentencing. Her court date is March 12, and she may go to prison.

On February 19, she will join us for a live feed talk about her experiences, the current case, and what this means for her and for other activists.

We are asking everyone who can to come out and show your support. This is government repression based on politics. If we don’t stand up to it, any one of us could be next.

Celebrate International Women’s Day 2015

Sponsored by Committee to Stop FBI Repression, Freedom Road Socialist Organization, and the U.S. Palestinian Community Network

March 8, International Women’s Day, born of the struggle of working women, of immigrants, in New York 100 years ago – is a day of celebration and resistance. There can be no more fitting way to mark the occasion than to revisit the past struggles and victories won, in order to continue to build the struggle for women’s liberation.

We’ll have as our special guest Rasmea Odeh. Her courage and strength as she faces ongoing persecution by the U.S. Dept. of Justice has made her a symbol of the resistance by women in Palestine and in the struggles for national liberation all over the world.

Other guests include:
Mariame Kaba, founder of the NIA Project in Chicago, and one of the members of We Charge Genocide, the group that appeared before the UN Committee on Torture to expose the Chicago Police.

Sarah Chambers, a member of the bargaining committee of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) that led the strike in 2012, and co-chair of the Caucus of Rank and File Educators, leaders in CTU.

Kait McIntyre, a leading anti-war activist in Chicago, and a member of Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

Plus cultural offerings from Chicago and the Philippines.

International Women’s Day in 2015: the system we live under is waging a war on women. Working class women; African American women and immigrant Latinas dealing with national oppression and racist discrimination; women in the oppressed nations of the world suffering under the wars and occupations of U.S. imperialism: all can take heart on this day. Women’s liberation is part of the bright future, where capitalism is ended and replaced by socialism.

Long Live International Women’s Day!

Malaak al-Khatib to be released Friday, family reports

The family of Malaak al-Khatib, the 14-year-old Palestinian schoolgirl who has been imprisoned since 31 December 2014, reported that she will be released on 13 February.

“Relatives of Malak al-Khatib said they were informed by the International Committee of the Red Cross that she will be released at the Jubara checkpoint near Tulkarem,” reported Ma’an News. She was sentenced to two months imprisonment and a fine of 6000 NIS ($1500 USD).

Malaak’s story has inspired worldwide outrage and solidarity. Palestinian writer and blogger Reham Alhelsi conducted a comprehensive interview with Malaak’s parents, available at her website: https://avoicefrompalestine.wordpress.com/2015/02/09/malak-al-khateeb-an-angel-from-palestine-held-captive-by-the-zionist-entity/

Alhelsi quotes Malaak’s mother, Khawla (Im Yousef): “Im Yousef remembered that day: ‘It was a big shock to all of us when we heard of her detention, and when we went to the interrogation centre that day, we thought she was coming home with us. We thought they would fine her and she would come back home. We said it doesn’t matter, we would borrow the money, or even if needed, we would sell the house we live in, to spare Malak the prison… but we were not able to do anything… in the end they sentenced her to a fine and imprisonment. I wish they had fined her another 5000 NIS, but spared her the prison. We miss her… she should be with her friends in school, she should be studying, a 14 year-old should not be locked up in Hasharon since over a month… where are the child’s rights? Where are the human rights? Where are women’s rights? To imprison a 14 year-old child … it’s a shock, not only for me… this means that tomorrow, they could take any little child they find walking down the street, and claim the child committed an operation… it is not only my daughter who is targeted, and I hope that she is the first and last child prisoner.'” Click here to read the full, extensive interview (with photos of Malaak’s family, drawings and room.)

March 15: San Jose, Costa Rica: Free the Hares Boys!

Part of the Global Call to Action for the Hares Boys.

Sunday, March 15
2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Plaza de la Cultura, San José, Costa Rica
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/400661190095156/

The following call to action is being circulated by the campaign to support the Hares Boys:

This year, Sunday 15th March will mark 2 years since 5 teenage boys from the village of Hares, Palestine, were kidnapped from their homes, abused and violently interrogated, and locked in an Israeli prison. All for something they didn’t do.

It began on 14th March 2013, after a car accident resulting in some serious injuries for its passengers was allegedly caused by Palestinian youths throwing stones at the vehicle; except that there is no evidence to suggest that stone-throwing took place at all.

That same night, Israeli army stormed the villages of Hares and Kifl Hares and detained 19 Palestinian youths. Obtaining their “confessions” through interrogation and ill-treatment, some of these youths were eventually released. Five of them, however, are still incarcerated to this day. These are the Hares Boys.

Should the Israeli military courts get their way, the Hares Boys will face long years in prison for a “crime” that carries no evidence of their supposed guilt and which all the boys deny.

To mark the 2 years since the boys’ incarceration, we are calling on campaigners around the world to devise local actions aimed at raising the profile of the case of the Hares Boys and by doing so, put pressure on the Israeli occupation to respect the principles of justice and release these kids from prison.

We invite you to organise leafleting, vigils and protests, boycott actions, petitioning and letter-writing, talksand film screenings.

The on-going fight against Israeli military aggression and occupation is getting stronger with every new atrocity the apartheid state commits; it matters to vocalise opposition to the continuing injustices the Hares Boys – and, by extension, all Palestinian children in Israeli military prisons – face daily, in order to prevent these dangerous precedents from taking place at all.

Join the fight against oppression. Stand on the side of justice.

February 9th-21st is the national week of solidarity with Rasmea Odeh!

On October 22, 2013, Rasmea Yousef Odeh was arrested by agents of the Department of Homeland Security.
She was indicted in federal court, charged with “Unlawful Procurement of Naturalization” based on immigration document answers she filed 20 years ago.

Rasmea is the Associate Director of the Arab American Action Network (AAAN) and has made it her life’s work to empower Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim families. We believe this is yet another politically-motivated arrest by the federal government of those who are critical of U.S. support for Israel’s crimes against Palestinian people.
