This Sunday, we mark the Days of Resistance call by Samidoun network, released on July 8th, the 48th anniversary of Ghassan Kanafani’s assassination.

As stated in the call:

“Today, the program of Israeli annexation continues to threaten Palestinians in the West Bank, including the most fertile agricultural land of the Jordan Valley, which is still slated for Israel’s latest land grab. Of course, this is simply the continuation of over 72 years of land theft, dispossession, apartheid and genocide – but it requires continued mobilization and action to confront, alongside the siege on Gaza, the mass imprisonment of Palestinians, the demolition of homes, the denial of Palestinian refugees’ right to return and further war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In this context, we call on all Palestinian communities and those who stand for justice in Palestine to join together to organize the Days of Resistance on August 7, 8 and 9, 2020. We urge all Palestinians inside and outside Palestine, and all of the national forces, popular institutions, youth, student and women’s movements, social justice movements and solidarity organizations to participate actively in “banging on the walls of the tank” – as in Kanafani’s Men in the Sun – to break down the walls of silence.

On these days, we also celebrate the historical symbols of the struggle of the Palestinian people, including the immortal Handala and his creator, the artist Naji al-Ali; the poet and struggler Kamal Nasser; the Palestinian writer Samira Azzam; the poet Ali Fouda; the revolutionary intellectual Basil al-Araj; and all of the martyrs and strugglers of Palestine who gave their lives, hearts and minds for liberation and return and in defense of the freedom and dignity of the Palestinian people.”

In that vein, we are gathering for a symbolic action commemorating and celebrating beloved historical and cultural figures that exemplify the ongoing Palestinian resistance, uplifting the contributions and lessons from Ghassan Kanafani and Naji al Ali, who also lost his life to assassination ten years after Kanafani, on August 29th.

Both were artists, who through their life gave words and images to the Palestinian struggle; building models of resistance culture, weaving them into one. They who gave their lives, hearts and minds for liberation and return and in defense of the freedom and dignity of the Palestinian people.

This Sunday, we raise Palestinian flags and banners honouring Kanafani & al-Ali and will share stories on their lives and work. Join us at 18:00 at Museumplein in remembering and continuing the struggle for Palestine, until liberation!

Sunday also marks Indigenous People’s Day and we will be joining the manifestation at Dam Square at 3pm, organised by Makibas foundation, Free West Papua Campaign (Nederland), Building the Baileo and Aralez . Deze zondag zullen wij samenkomen voor een symbolische actie die het leven van de geliefde historische figuren Ghassan Kanafani en Naji al-Ali viert en herdenkt.

Zoals Samidoun schrijft in de actieoproep voor de Dagen van Verzet:

“Tegenwoordig blijft het programma van Israëlische annexatie de Palestijnen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever bedreigen, inclusief de meest vruchtbare landbouwgrond van de Jordaanvallei. Dit is natuurlijk een voortzetting van meer dan 72 jaar landdiefstal, onteigening, apartheid en genocide – en het vereist voortdurende mobilisatie en actie om dit tegen te houden, net als de blokkade van Gaza, het massale gevangenschap van Palestijnen, de sloop van huizen, de ontzegging van het Recht op Terugkeer van Palestijnse vluchtelingen en andere oorlogsmisdaden en misdaden tegen de menselijkheid.

In dit verband roepen we alle Palestijnse gemeenschappen en degenen die opkomen voor gerechtigheid in Palestina op om samen de dagen van verzet te organiseren op 7, 8 en 9 augustus 2020. We dringen er bij alle Palestijnen binnen en buiten Palestina op aan, en alle nationale krachten, volksinstituten, jeugd-, studenten- en vrouwenbewegingen, bewegingen voor sociale rechtvaardigheid en solidariteitsorganisaties om actief deel te nemen aan het “bonken op de muren van de tank” – zoals in Kanafani’s boek Mannen in de Zon – om de muren van stilte te doorbreken.

Op deze gedenkwaardige dag brengt Samidoun het warmste saluut van strijd aan al diegenen die de Palestijnse Dag van Woede en activiteiten rond 1 juli in Palestina en internationaal hebben geïnitieerd en eraan hebben deelgenomen. We danken alle Palestijnse en progressieve media instellingen die verslag hebben gedaan van de acties die het zionistische “annexatieproject” en de kolonisatie confronteren. Dit “annexatieproject” onderstreept het expansionistische, koloniale, racistische karakter van de Israëlische staat en de voortdurende kolonisatie en diefstal van Palestijns en Arabisch land gedurende meer dan 72 jaar, als een centraal onderdeel van de imperialistische aanval op de hele regio.”

Zowel Ghassan Kanafani als Naji al-Ali waren gevierde artiesten, die hun leven hebben gewijd aan het creëren van woorden en beelden die de boodschap van de Palestijnse bevrijdingsstrijd verkondigen.

Beide hebben hun creatieve uitingen, die een continue bedreiging vormde voor het voorbestaan van de Israëlische apartheid, met de dood moeten bekopen. Zij werden vermoord en geven daarmee hun leven, hart en geest voor de bevrijding van Palestina en de terugkeer van haar volk.

Deze zondag zullen wij onze Palestijnse vlaggen met trots dragen en de offers van Kanafani & Al-Ali eren. Wij zullen hun verhalen en creaties met elkaar delen en zo gezamenlijk de cultuur van verzet in stand houden. Kom ook om 18:00 naar het Museumplein en steun de strijd voor een vrij Palestina!

Zondag is bovendien ‘Indegineous People’s Day’ en wij zullen ons daarom aansluiten bij de demonstratie om 15:00 op de Dam. Deze demo word georganiseerd door @makiba, Free West Papua, Building the Baileo and Arelez.

Wij roepen iedereen op om zich hierbij aan te sluiten. Samidoun staat schouder aan schouder met inheemse volken van over de hele wereld, in onze gezamenlijke strijd tegen kolonialisme en imperialisme!
