Global protests denounce Gaza massacre, demand justice for Palestine

Following the Israeli massacre of at least 17 Palestinians and wounding of over 1,400 Palestinian civilians on Friday, 30 March in the Gaza Strip, protests have taken place in cities and towns around the world. The protesters in Gaza were part of tens of thousands participating in the Great March of Return, a mass, popular demonstration upholding Palestinian refugees’ right to return home, demanding an end to the siege of Gaza and commemorating Land Day.

Many additional protests are scheduled in the coming days, including events and actions in Victoria, Cagliari, Bristol, Copenhagen, Boston, Brussels, Albertville, Albany, Vancouver, Melbourne, Manchester, London, Derry, Dublin, Jersey and Bordeaux among many others.

Dozens of cities have already held commemorations and actions, and photos and videos from several of these events are shared below:

In Athens, a spirited crowd of demonstrators marched to the Israeli embassy on Saturday, 31 March. There, they chanted and sang Palestinian songs, carrying Palestinian flags and banners and demanding the Israeli embassy leave Greece. In response, the protesters were attacked by police surrounding the embassy. Tear gas was fired on the demonstrators and several protesters were beaten by police after they fell to the ground.

London protest demands end to British support for Israeli massacres and colonialism

Photo: Victory to the Intifada

Protesters gathered in London on Saturday, 31 March following the massacre of at least 17 Palestinians and the wounding of over 1,400 by Israeli occupation forces on 30 March, Land Day. The occupation forces brutally attacked a mass popular demonstration on the colonial “borders” of the Gaza Strip, the Great March of Return. The demonstration both commemorated Land Day and underlined Palestinian refugees’ commitment and determination to return to their land even after 70 years of forced exile.

In commemoration of Land Day and in protest of the massacre, several organizations, including Victory to the Intifada and the Revolutionary Communist Group, organized a march down Oxford Street in solidarity with the Palestinian people and demanding that British imperialism end its support for Israel. The protest also highlighted corporations and banks that do business with and profit from Zionist violence, apartheid and colonialism, urging a boycott of these institutions.

“We are here to salute the 17 martyrs and thousands of wounded who rose up against occupation and came out to assert their legitimate rights, as we come out to demonstrate today to call on the British to boycott occupation,” said Toby Harberson of Victory to the Intifada. The protest marched by a number of corporations doing business with the occupation, including Marks & Spencer, Boots, Victoria’s Secret, Barclays and HSBC. Following the march, protesters joined in an action outside the Israeli embassy.

The protesters also highlighted their support for Irish political prisoners and the unity of the struggle of the Palestinian and Irish people confronting colonialism, Zionism and imperialism. Easter Sunday marks the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising against British colonialism, an occasion widely commemorated by Irish republicans and their supporters.

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network was one of the groups represented in the demonstration. Participants carried Palestinian flags, banners and signs with slogans including “Boycott the occupation,” “Zionism is racism” and “Victory for the Palestinian resistance.” Some carried signs featuring Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani as well as the red banners of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Additional events are being organized in the coming days in London in support of Palestine, including a demonstration on Saturday, 7 April as well as several events commemorating Palestinian Prisoners Day. Samidoun is a co-sponsor of a protest on 14 April in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners and a talk on 17 April featuring Palestinian leftist writer Khaled Barakat, the international coordinator of the Campaign to Free Ahmad Sa’adat.

New Yorkers protest Gaza massacre, support Great Return March

New Yorkers protested in an emergency demonstration on Friday, 30 March in response to the Israeli massacre against a mass Palestinian civilian demonstration in the Gaza Strip. Over 17 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,400 injured by live Israeli occupation fire directed at the mass demonstration, the Great March of Return. The demonstration was a commemoration of Land Day and emphasized the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their lands and homes in occupied Palestine ’48 which they have been denied for over 70 years as well as demanding an end to the 11-year siege of Gaza.

The massacre, coldly boasted of by Israeli occupation forces, including “Dahiyeh doctrine” architect Gabi Eizenkot who personally commanded the repression of the protest, against a popular civil demonstration evoked worldwide popular anger and protest. Dozens of demonstrations have been organized around the world to protest the massacre and demand immediate action, including the expulsion of Israeli diplomats, an immediate arms embargo and international sanctions against the Israeli occupation state.

At the same time, the U.S. and other imperialist and colonialist governments have done little even to condemn the massacre, while corporate and state media have done their best to obscure the massive state violence aimed at a civilian demonstration of oppressed people living under occupation and siege.

In New York, Within Our Lifetime – United for Palestine joined with several Students for Justice in Palestine chapters as well as the members of the NY4Palestine Coalition, including Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, to call for an immediate emergency demonstration in Washington Square Park. Despite the rain, dozens of protesters came out to express their outrage at the Israeli massacre and their support for Palestinian rights, especially the right to return.

Joe Catron, the U.S. coordinator of Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, spoke at the protest and read the Samidoun statement on the massacre and the need for international popular action. As he spoke, he wore a green scarf with the logo of the Palestinian resistance organization Hamas from the over three years he spent in Gaza, demonstrating the unity of all Palestinians and supporters of Palestine with the broad spectrum of Palestinian resistance.

Joe Catron later conducted a TV interview with Press TV on the massacre in Gaza. During his interview, he discussed his current participation as a speaker on the ISM Spring Tour. Four speakers are traveling across North America during March and April, speaking about the work of the International Solidarity Movement. He will be speaking alongside Islam Maraqa at events in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Carolina, Massachusetts, New York and Missouri in the coming weeks; Rana Nazzal and Katie Miranda will be speaking this week throughout California and Canada. The ISM Tour speakers also issued a statement urging participation in the ISM and global solidarity organizing following the massacre.

New York organizing in response to the massacre and in support of the Great Return March is continuing, with plans already in place for rallies and marches to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Nakba in May.

Khalida Jarrar leads class on international law for fellow Palestinian women prisoners

Imprisoned Palestinian parliamentarian, feminist and leftist leader Khalida Jarrar conducted an internal education class in international human rights and humanitarian law for her fellow female prisoners held in HaSharon prison. In a report issued by the Prisoners’ Affairs Commission, it was noted that Jarrar conducted the class for 32 hours in half-hour sessions. Over 30 women prisoners, including some of the minor girls held in HaSharon, participated in the classes.

Jarrar’s class exemplifies the educational role that Palestinian prisoners have always defined for themselves inside Israeli occupation prisons, known over the years as “schools for revolution.” Palestinan prisoners regularly organize classes among themselves along with reading circles and study groups to develop their political, legal and analytical knowledge. These classes are entirely self-organized and conducted by Palestinian prisoners, without the involvement and contrary to the will of Israeli occupation jailers.

Jarrar said in the report that the course aims to analyze and describe the situation of the prisoners through the lens of international human rights and humanitarian law, especially those aspects pertaining to the rights of families and people in detention. She particularly noted the difficult and austere living conditions and poor physical and mental health situation of women prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons, as well as ongoing harassment by jailers and Israeli “criminal” prisoners.

She noted that the course was one example of ongoing work to establish a cumulative, collective educational program for women prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons.

Jarrar is held under administrative detention, imprisonment without charge or trial; seized on 2 July 2017, she was ordered to six months in administrative detention. Her detention was extended again for another six months on 28 December 2017. She is one of three women and over 450 total administrative detainees, among around 60 women prisoners and 6,100 total Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails.

Administrative detention orders are indefinitely renewable and based on secret evidence. Palestinians can be jailed for years at a time under administrative detention. Jarrar and her fellow administrative detainees are currently in the middle of a 48-day boycott of Israeli occupation courts, demanding an end to the policy and practice of administrative detention.

She previously was imprisoned for 15 months on charges of “incitement” for her political activity in defense of Palestinian prisoners and in advocating for Palestinian freedom. In addition to her parliamentary role, she is a well-known advocate for Palestinian prisoners and Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association.

Former prisoner’s life, health at risk as he is denied right to travel outside Gaza

Tariq Ezzedine

Former Palestinian prisoner Tariq Ezzedine continues to be denied access to lifesaving medical treatment, reported colleagues and his family. Ezzedine was released to the Gaza Strip as part of the 2011 Wafa al-Ahrar prisoner exchange agreement; however, the Egyptian government continues to prevent him from traveling through the Rafah crossing to receive treatment.

Jaafar Ezzedine, Tariq’s brother, spoke to Palestinian news agency Wattan TV; he noted that his brother has leukemia, a form of blood cancer. He has been hospitalized in Gaza for two months but requires treatment that is only available abroad. While his doctors have prepared his medical reports and arranged for him to receive treatment, he has been denied entry into Egypt on two occasions.  His brother is also a former prisoner who participated in a long-term hunger strike in Israeli prisons while held without charge or trial.

During an opening of the Rafah crossing last week, Ezzedine came to the crossing two times after his name was registered on the lists of people approved to travel. Despite this, he was denied on both occasions.

He noted that Palestinian ministries confirmed that Ezzedine’s name was in fact on the list and when Tariq went to the crossing, he was held there for a full day, his passport was kept and taken before he was told that he would not be admitted and must return to Gaza.

Jaafar Ezzedine said that it is apparent that Israeli pressure on the Egyptian government is being exerted in order to prevent Tariq from traveling. He noted that the family will hold a press conference in front of the Egyptian embassy in Ramallah on 3 April in order to escalate pressure on Egypt to allow free travel to Tariq Ezzedine.

Khader Adnan, prominent Palestinian prisoner, also issued a statement from prison, urging action to save the life of Tariq Ezzedine after the deterioration of his health. He emphasized the moral responsibility of the Egyptian authorities to allow Ezzedine to pass and reject the malicious role of the Israeli occupation. He called on all of the Palestinian factions and the former prisoners in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Qatar to act before it is too late for Ezzedine.

Palestinian student leader suspends hunger strike; interrogation extended for eight more days

Omar Kiswani and the scene of his arrest at Bir Zeit University

Palestinian student leader Omar Kiswani suspended his hunger strike after 14 days, according to Palestinian lawyer Mamoun al-Hashem of the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society. The occupation court in the Moskobiya detention center extended his detention for another eight days on 2 April under the pretext of completing his interrogation.

Al-Hashem said that Kiswani, the president of the Bir Zeit University Student Council, suspended his strike due to exhaustion under constant, intensive interrogation. He has been under interrogation since being seized on 7 March by undercover Israeli occupation forces known as “mustaribeen” who invaded and then opened fire in the middle of the Bir Zeit university campus.

The Moskobiya detention center, where Kiswani is held, is notorious for ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian prisoners.

Al-Hashem had his first visit with Kiswani on 2 April after being denied access to an attorney since he was seized by occupation forces. He lost 13 kilograms while conducting his hunger strike. Kiswani told his lawyer that when he was arrested, he was punched and kicked by Israeli occupation soldiers, who also hit him with an electrified baton when they took him to a military camp.

He said that he was forced to sit on a chair for four hours without being allowed to drink water or use the bathroom before being taken to the Moskobiya interrogation center. Once detained in Moskobiya, he was regularly subjected to interrogation lasting for 18 hours a day without a break, forced to sit on an iron chair.

On the ninth day of his arrest, his mother was seized from the family home and brought to Moskobiya detention center. Kiswani was prohibited from talking to her but he was shown his mother from a distance as a means of pressure in an attempt to force him into a “confession.” His mother was later released on the same day.

Kiswani is one of approximately 340 Palestinian university students imprisoned by Israeli occupation forces, including more than 60 from Bir Zeit University alone. Every year in late March and early April, Israeli occupation repression directed at Palestinian students intensifies and grows as annual student council elections approach. The arrests are a form of Israeli intervention in and suppression of Palestinian student politics and organizing.

Ola Marshoud

One such Palestinian student, Ola Marshoud, 21, a student of information sciences at An-Najah National University in Nablus, was brought before the Salem military court on 2 April. the military court then adjourned the hearing until next Wednesday, 11 April. Marshoud was seized by occupation forces on 12 March after being summoned for interrogation; she was held in the Petah Tikva interrogation center under questioning for 21 days before being transferred to a prison with fellow female prisoners.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza defied Israeli terror, gathering at the boundaries of the “dead zone” that the Israeli occupier has imposed on Gaza, asserting the right of Palestinian refugees uprooted by the occupier to return to their homes. Once again the Zionist army did not hesitate in its violent attacks on unarmed protesters. 15 dead and over 1,000 injured are the bitter price in blood paid by Palestinians who continue to seek freedom.

In Athens, the SYRIZA-ANEL government showed its gesture to the Palestinian people with tear gas canisters and batons last Saturday outside the Israeli embassy. Several demonstrators were injured and required treatment. The SYRIZA-ANEL government agents beat protesters who had fallen on the street. The reason for this unprovoked attack was to dismantle the protest outside the Israeli embassy and please their Zionist allies and U.S. patrons.

Shortly thereafter the government issued a statement criticizing the “violence of the Israeli authorities,” while these actions exposed the hypocrisy of the government circus.
