Sinceramente,

Red Student Faction – UNM is calling for folks to join us in calling for the release of PFLP member and Palestinian Feminist Khalida Jarrar.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, April 2, dozens of Israeli occupation soldiers raided the home of Palestinian parliamentarian Khalida Jarrar, a prominent leftist leader, feminist, and human rights advocate, arresting her, kicking down the door and holding her husband in a separate room. A leader in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Jarrar defeated an Israeli occupation attempt in September 2014 to expel her from Ramallah to Jericho for six months. Take action: Demand the immediate release of Khalida Jarrar!

CAIA: Free Khalida Jarrar, with sample letter to Canadian MPs

Toronto’s Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid issued the following statement calling for release of Khalida Jarrar and Palestinian prisoners, and providing a sample letter to send to Canadian MPs on the case:

Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid: Free Khalida Jarrar and all other Palestinian political prisoners!

On April 2 at approximately 1:30 a.m., dozens of Israeli occupation soldiers kicked down the door and raided the home of Khalida Jarrar, a prominent human rights advocate, member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, and board member of Addameer, a prisoners’ rights organization. Jarrar was taken to an undisclosed location and arrested without charge.

According to Suha Jarrar, Khalida Jarrar’s daughter, “my mother is an influential leader, feminist and activist. She speaks strongly and loudly against colonization and oppression. Her arrest is a reflection of Israel’s ongoing tactics to attack freedom of speech and silence those who speak freely against occupation and apartheid.”

Israel is currently holding 6,000 Palestinian political prisoners in detention, including 163 children under the age of 16. Jarrar’s arrest now brings the number of Palestinian Legislative Council members held in Israeli detention to 17, many of whom are being held without charge or trial. Palestinian political prisoners face systematic torture and persecution during their arrest and detention at the hands of the Israeli military.

The imprisonment of Palestinians, including Jarrar, is part of Israel’s system of occupation, colonization and apartheid. This is the same system that attacked Gaza this past summer, when Israel killed over 2,000 Palestinians and wounded thousands of others.

In response to Israel’s denial of Palestinian prisoners rights, Palestinian human rights organizations have called for the intensification of the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel. BDS targets corporations such as G4S, which maintains and profits from Israel’s prison system, and SodaStream, which is manufactured on an illegal Israeli settlement, further entrenching the occupation of Palestinians in the West Bank.

In response to Jarrar’s imprisonment, we vow to strengthen our BDS efforts to pressure Israel to free Jarrar and all Palestinian prisoners, and to respect international law. We urge our allies to join our efforts until Jarrar and all Palestinian prisoners are free.

Here’s how you can help:

  1. Sign and share the petition (click here).
  2. Click here to send a message to the Israeli Occupation Forces demanding Jarra’s immediate release, and to show them that the world is watching.

Sample text:

Dear (NAME OF MP),

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, dozens of Israeli soldiers arrested Khalida Jarrar, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, after breaking down the door of her home in Ramallah. Ms. Jarrar remains in custody without charge, and it is believed that she has been moved to a prison inside Israel.

For three decades Ms. Jarrar has been a prominent and relentless advocate for women’s rights, prisoners’ rights, and Palestinian freedom from Israeli occupation. In another house raid last August, Israeli authorities served Ms. Jarrar with a six-month internal deportation order, which would have confined her to the West Bank city of Jericho. She refused to comply, and due to a campaign by Palestinian and international human rights activists, the deportation order was subsequently suspended. Five years ago, Israel also sought to prevent Ms. Jarrar from travelling to Jordan for urgent medical treatment, relenting only after her case received international attention.

The arrest of Ms. Jarrar targets not only her, but Palestinian society more broadly, by removing an elected and committed leader from their midst. She is not the only political leader arbitrarily deprived of their freedom, as 17 other elected members of the Palestinian Legislative Council are currently incarcerated by Israel.

I urge you to condemn this arrest in Parliament, in other public forums, and directly to Israel’s ambassador in Canada.

As an elected Member of Parliament, I hope that you take the arbitrary arrest and detention of an elected Parliamentarian seriously and act immediately.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

(ADD YOUR NAME HERE)

Basque party EH Bildu calls for freedom of Khalida Jarrar

EH Bildu (Euskal Herria Bildu), a progressive Basque political party with representation in the European Parliament, has issued a statement demanding the immediate release of Khalida Jarrar. Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network also expresses its solidarity with EH Bildu and the Basque people in their struggle to free hundreds of Basque political prisoners held by the Spanish state.

EH Bildu has repeatedly expressed its support for the Palestinian cause, and MEP Josu Juaristi (above, left, with Jarrar) attended Khalida Jarrar’s protest tent in 2014 during a delegation to Palestine, demanding the cancellation of the expulsion order against her.

EH Bildu’s statement calling for the immediate release of Khalida Jarrar (in Euskara):

In the early morning hours of Thursday, April 2, dozens of Israeli occupation soldiers raided the home of Palestinian parliamentarian Khalida Jarrar, kicking down the door, arresting her and holding her husband in a separate room. A leader in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Jarrar defeated an Israeli occupation attempt in September 2014 to expel her from Ramallah to Jericho for six months.

Khalida Jarrar is a long-time Palestinian political prisoners’ advocate, former executive director of Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association and a member of its board; she chairs the Prisoners’ Committee of the Palestinian Legislative Council. She is also active in the Palestinian women’s movement, a feminist and prominent voice for the defence and expansion of women’s rights.

EH Bildu’s MEP Josu Juaristi, met Jarrar during a GUE-NGL visit to Palestine in September 2014, shortly before her victory over the occupation forces and showed his support. In EH Bildu’s opinion the attack on Khalida Jarrar is an attack on Palestinian parliamentary legitimacy and political expression. EH Bildu calls on the Israeli Government to immediately release Khalida Jarrar and calls on Basque and European institutions to contact Israeli authorities to cancel this order.

More about EH Bildu:

EH Bildu is a coalition of four pro-independence left Basque parties, Eusko Alkartasuna, Alternatiba, Aralar and Sortu. Originally founded as Bildu, we have obtained near 25% of the votes in every election since 2011 and became the 1st force in number of votes in the last European Parliament elections (May 2014).

Euskal Herria Bildu stands for three main issues, Social Justice, Right to Decide and Resolution and Peace for the Basque Country.

In the last European Parliament elections in May 2014, our candidate, Josu Juaristi, was elected as MEP as part of « the Peoples decide » coalition. He then became a member of the GUE-NGL group in the European Parliament. Given the links parties in the coalition have with the European Free Alliance, we also endorsed a collaboration protocol with their Group in the European Parliament.

Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a Lebanese Arab from the town of Qoubaiyat in northern Lebanon, who worked with the Lebanese Communist Party and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and then the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Faction, has been imprisoned in France at the behest of the United States since 1984.

On January 10, 2013, French courts ordered his release and deportation from France to Lebanon, but the French government refused to release him, in collaboration with the US.

This is a protest against French courts’ recent decision to reject the new application of Georges Abdallah for parole and release to Lebanon, in front of the French Center in Ramallah.

Immediate Release of Palestinian Freedom Fighter Khalida Jarrrar

(in Danish below)

Today, April 2, in the morning, over 60 Israeli occupation soldiers raided the home in Ramallah of Palestinian parliamentarian Khalida Jarrar and arrested her.

Khalida Jarrar is a well known Palestinian human rights advocate and feminist and a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. She has been a visible participant in the West Bank demonstrations last summer – in support of the Palestinians in Gaza, denouncing the Israeli killing of more than 2000 Palestinians.

In the late summer 2014 the occupation forces tried to expel her from Ramallah  to a remote place in Jericho on the West Bank. It was the courage of Khalida Jarrar together with a strong international solidarity campaign which prevented the Israeli authorities to carry out their plan. But now they try again!! We shall prevent their plan!

Video: London protest calls for freedom for Khalida Jarrar, Palestinian prisoners

A London protest organized by Inminds’ Palestinian Prisoner campaign outside the headquarters of G4S on April 2 called for the freedom of Palestinian prisoners, focusing particularly on the hundreds of Palestinian children – including the Hares Boys – jailed by Israeli occupation forces – and on the detention of Palestinian parliamentarian and leftist leader Khalida Jarrar.

Video:

Khalida Jarrar transferred to HaSharon Prison

Khalida Jarrar, Palestinian parliamentarian, prisoner advocate, and leftist leader, arrested early in the morning of April 2 by Israeli occupation forces, has been transferred from interrogation at Ofer prison to HaSharon prison, according to Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, of which she is the former executive director and current Board Vice President. The Addameer report:

UPDATE: Khalida Jarrar has been held in Ofer under investigation. Her investigation period has ended and she will be transferred to HaSharon prison. Her detention may be extended on Sunday. A military prosecutor will either submit charges, hold her under administrative detention, or release her. Khalida is in the Palestinian National Commission for the followup of the International Criminal Court. Follow for updates on Sunday to attend possible hearing.

Addameer also released a statement calling for her release:

Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association demanded the immediate release of the Vice President of its Board of Directors, deputy of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Khalida Jarrar, 52, and stated that the occupation assumes full responsibility for her life.

Over 30 occupation soldiers, accompanied by snipers, surrounded the home of MP Khalida Jarrar in Ramallah around 1:00 AM on Thursday morning, April 2, 2015, and then broke into her home and searched it, confiscating two computers and a mobile phone during the search, before arresting MP Jarrar and taking her to an unknown destination.

Addameer demanded that institutions of the international community pressure the occupation to immediately release MP Khalida Jarrar and stop the targeting of political leaders and rights activists in Palestinian society.

Addameer said that the arrest of MP Khalida Jarrar is part of a systematic policy practiced by the occupation forces against the political leadership of the Palestinian people, including continuous assassination and prosecution, in order to prevent them from playing their role in raising the consciousness, political and civil rights of Palestinian society, and to block their role in supporting the resistance of the Palestinian people against the occupation.

MP Jarrar suffers a difficult health status, and must have laboratory tests every three days to determine appropriate treatment to maintain her health and life. There are now 16 detainees who are members of the Palestinian Legislative Council, 8 of whom are held under administrative detention orders, 6 who are serving sentences, and 2 detained, including Jarrar.

MP Khalida Jarrar has been frequently harassed by occupation forces, including the order of deportation to Jericho on August 20, 2015, before the duration of the order was shortened about a month after its issuance after a sit-in by MP Jarrar at the Palestinian Legislative Council headquarters in rejection of the order. Israeli forces also issued a decree banning Khalida Jarrar from traveling since 1998 to the present day, even after her invitation to participate in the preparatory meetings of the Universal Declaration on the Protection of Human Rights Defenders in Paris.

Since 1998, she has been forbidden to travel outside occupied Palestine; when she needed medical treatment in Jordan in 2010, she struggled for months in a public campaign before finally receiving her treatment.

Thousands of organizations and individuals from around the world took action in August-September 2014, declaring that they stand with Khalida Jarrar and demanding the cancellation of the “special supervision order” forcibly transferring her from Ramallah to Jericho. Jarrar refused expulsion to Jericho. Instead, she has set up a protest tent in the Palestinian Legislative Council courtyard in Ramallah, where she lived and worke until the order was lifted on September 16, 2014. “It is the occupation who must leave our homeland,” said Jarrar. The tent was visited by numerous Palestinian and international delegations, including international members of Parliament.

There are now 16 members of the elected Palestinian Legislative Council imprisoned by Israel, 9 under administrative detention without trial or charge. PLC members have been repeatedly and systematically targeted by Israeli occupation forces.

The Khalida Jarrar Solidarity Campaign is being reactivated to demand her immediate release.

Free Khalida Jarrar Now!

Please send the letter below to Israeli occupation forces and demand her immediate release:

Letter Text:
To Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Brigadier General Dani Efroni:

I write today to demand the immediate release of Palestinian member of parliament Khalida Jarrar. Jarrar, a longtime prisoners’ rights activist and political leader, was arrested in her Ramallah home in the early morning hours of April 2, as her home was stormed by dozens of soldiers and her husband locked in another room.

The targeting of Palestinian political leaders for arrest by Israeli occupation forces is an obvious attempt to silence and suppress Palestinian demands for freedom from occupation and apartheid. The arrest of Khalida Jarrar is also an attack on Palestinian women’s leadership and organizing.

Thousands of people and organizations around the world stood with Khalida Jarrar against the illegal forced transfer and expulsion by the IOF last fall, and we stand with her now and demand her immediate release.

The world is watching and we stand with Khalida against this injustice.

Sincerely,
