Nakba Day (Memory of the Catastrophe) is the annual day of commemoration of the Nakba, also known as the Palestinian Catastrophe, which comprised the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948, and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian people.
It generally commemorated on 15 May, the day after the End of the British Mandate for Palestine and the creation of the State of Israel in its place.
Given the vicious Israeli attacks on the people of Jerusalem, Ethnic Cleansing of Sheikh Jarrah and Bombing of Gaza, this event is essential to attend to show your solidarity with the Palestinian people.
We will meet on the Otago Museum Reserve, 363 Great King Street to wave flags, read poems, share stories and call for real tangible action from the New Zealand Government.
Speakers TBC. Event is fully accessible and family-friendly – though upsetting topics may be discussed.
