Around the world people are resisting and rebelling against an increasingly corrupt, violent and barbaric imperialist system. With the positive arguments in favour of the system largely discredited, the propagandists of imperialism have turned to labeling peoples legitimate struggles for justice and liberation as ‘terrorist’. And repressive states from Canada to Israel to the Philippines have passed legislation to criminalize people’s movements, mass struggles and solidarity efforts. Terrorist tagging and criminalization are then used to justify state sponsored extrajudicial killings, arrests, incarceration and other forms of repression.

Join International League of Peoples Struggle for a discussion of resistance and repression in the Philippines, India, Palestine, Latin America and on Turtle Island.

France, Italy – 2018 – duration 2h08

Discussion following the screening led by Hisham Abu Shahla, PhD student in political science who is conducting research on Palestine and was part of the film’s team.

In the rural outskirts of Gaza, the Samouni family is about to celebrate a wedding. This is the first party since the last war. Amal, Fouad, their brothers and their cousins have lost their parents, their homes and their olive trees. The neighborhood where they live is under reconstruction. They replant trees and plow fields, but a more difficult task still lies with these young survivors: rebuilding their own memoy. Through their memories, Samouni Road paints a portrait of this family before, during and after the event that changed their lives forever.

Evening organized by the French Jewish Union for Peace UJFP and France-Palestine Solidarity Association AFPS.

25 November, Zurich: Cafe Palestine – Razan al-Najjar

With book table and products from Palestine

Palestinian food from 5 pm, Film and discussion 6 pm

Our guests are: Sabreen and Ashraf al-Najjar and director Iyad Alasttal

Cafe Palestine is dedicated to Razan al-Najjar. The 21-year-old volunteer paramedic was shot dead in Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip on 1 June 2018 by an Israeli army sniper. Razan wore the white coat of the health service, and should have been protected under international law.

Razan was shot deliberately because she was part of the Great Return March, which has been taking place every Friday since 30 March for Palestinians’ right to return to their homes. Photos show her as a young woman who tried to save lives despite the danger, whose colorful headscarf stood out in the march.

We will screen the documentary, “Razan, Trace of a Butterfly,” by Iyad Alasttal (30 min, Arabic/English subtitles). The film follows Razan’s mother and family in their home. We meet the neighbors, get to know the life of this young woman and see these peaceful marches.

Mother Sabreen and father Ashraf al-Najjar will tell us about their daughter, the situation in Gaza and the marches.

Wir zeigen den Dokumentarfilm „Razan, a Track of a Butterfly” von Iyad Alasttal (30 min, arabisch, englisch untertitelt).

‘As long as there’s occupation, there’ll be resistance’

The following article by Jehan Alfarra and Shatha Khalil is reprinted from Middle East Monitor.

Former Palestinian prisoner Taysir Suleiman has lived in Turkey since his 2011 release from Israeli detention as part of the prisoner swap deal negotiated by Hamas and occupation forces.

As a Jerusalemite, Suleiman’s release was conditional on his being sent into exile. He has been living in Istanbul since.

In Jerusalem, Suleiman tells MEMO at the Palestine Media Forum in the Turkish city, “there was a large number of Israeli occupation controls and we lived under their grip”.

After a couple of years of carrying out resistance operations which saw them take control of a number of weapons from Israeli forces, Suleiman was arrested and handed a life term.

Over a period of 18 and a half years, he was transferred between 24 prisoners across Israel and the occupied territories. He says during this time occupation forces worked to break the prisoners’ morale. “Life in prison is built on morale. In prison, the occupation works to break your morale which led you to resist it. It doesn’t want you to be a revolutionary or to rebel against the occupation’s actions.” But the Palestinian Prisoners’ Movement operates in every prison, he explains, and its purpose is to “raise people’s morale so when prisoners are released they become like we are now, fighting by every means available to us in the countries that we are in to regain our rights as Palestinians and to continue our armed struggle in our Palestinian lands because if we are not strong on the ground we will not be able to free it.”

Since his release, Suleiman has been working to keep the stories of the resistance in the media. “The resistance needs a media arm to defend it,” he says.

“As long as there’s an occupation then there must be resistance,” Suleiman adds.

“If there are those in the world who wish to free the Palestinian people without spilling a drop of blood then we are with them, but we hope that a cascade of Palestinian blood will not continue while such efforts are being exerted,” he says of the criticism levelled at Palestinian fighters who are battling Israel’s army. “We in Palestine have been forced to use weapons because the occupation is killing us with its weapons.”

Palestinian prisoners play a very important role in the Palestinian struggle for liberation ever since Israel has criminalized all forms of Palestinian existence and resistance. Arbitrary arrests and the imprisonment of Palestinians who peacefully demonstrate against the Israeli occupation happen on a daily-basis and, today, there are around 6,500 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons, out of which approximately 250 are children.

Joe Catron is a journalist who has lived in Gaza for over three years, where he worked directly with prisoners’ families and former prisoners. He is now the U.S. coordinator of Samidoun, the Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network. Come hear from him more about the Palestinian Prisoners’ Struggle!

Join us this Sunday for a screening of the recently released documentary Killing Gaza.

“Independent journalists Max Blumenthal and Dan Cohen documented Israel’s 2014 assault on Gaza during the war, and chronicled its horrific aftermath. As they waded through the rubble of Gaza’s destroyed border regions, they turned a camera onto the survivors of the slaughter and let them speak for themselves.

Dan returned, week after week, to capture on film the daily struggles of the people of Gaza as they suffered through one of the worst winters in recorded history, and then weathered the sweltering summer heat without electricity and — in many cases — without homes.

While giving voice to the pain of a people under siege, Cohen and Blumenthal also highlighted Gazans’ inspiring acts of creative resistance, from painting to break-dancing to literature, that allow them maintain their humanity in the face of deprivation and war.

Killing Gaza is much more than a documentary about Palestinian resilience and suffering. It is a chilling visual document of war crimes committed by the Israeli military, featuring direct testimony and evidence from the survivors, delivered to them often just days after escaping indiscriminate shelling, bombings and summary executions.”

Following this we will have a discussion and updates on the current situation in Gaza. The March of Return has seen hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza participate in the mass demonstrations along the border fence. The Zionist regime has reacted with violent crimes on unarmed civilians, with 220 Palestinians killed in the past 7 months. Just last week another ceasefire was agreed to following a barrage of airstrikes on Gaza. Meanwhile, Israeli parliamentary politics continue to use resistance in Gaza as a tool in their possible early upcoming elections. Following the global trend of a shift to the far-right.

We must not lose sight of the brutality of political imprisonment, especially when directed against children as young as 10, facing violent arrests, charges and imprisonment for several years. Other political prisoners like Georges Abdallah and Mumia Abu-Jamal have been fighting for over 34 years for their freedom without relinquishing their principles even slightly. It is our duty to speak their names and ensure their voices are heard. This event is in the spirit of exchange, networking and solidarity between prisoner solidarity organizations and individuals.
