31 October, Manchester: Protest the Balfour “Celebrations” #ApartheidOffCampus

Tuesday, 31 October
6:30 pm
University of Manchester – Whitworth Hall
Manchester, UK

We have learned that the University of Manchester plans to host an event co-organised by the Israeli embassy and the Zionist Federation, to celebrate 100 years since the Balfour Declaration on Tuesday 31st October at 7.30pm. Although not yet made public, despite numerous requests, this event is planned to be held in the Whitworth building at the University of Manchester. It will ‘celebrate’ the Declaration that lead to the expulsion of 800,000 Palestinians from their homes and the destruction of over 400 villages during Al-Nakba in 1948. To celebrate this is to dance on the rubble of Palestinian homes, to rejoice at the massacres of innocent people, and mock the ongoing horrors of Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza for the past 50 years.

This perverse celebration compounds the University of Manchester’s existing institutional and investment links with Israeli institutions complicit in war crimes.

FULL STATEMENT: https://bdsuom.com/2017/10/12/statement-from-student-societies-demanding-the-university-cancel-the-balfour-celebrations/

We call on all students, academics, trade unionists, and concerned individuals to take a stand for the Palestinians, still occupied, still violently forced from their land, and still the victims of the shameful support of UK institutions, from the Balfour Declaration to the University of Manchester today. Join the ‘Apartheid Off Campus’ protest at the Whitworth building Tuesday 31st October.

30 October, NYC: Protest to free Bilal Diab and Hassan Shokeh

Monday, 30 October
5:00 pm
Best Buy – Union Square
52 E. 14th St, NYC
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/2037195383179876/

Bilal Diab launched a hunger strike on Tuesday, October 17 following the denial of his appeal against his administrative detention, Israeli imprisonment without charge or trial on the basis of secret evidence. The Ofer military court rejected the appeal, claiming that the secret file shows that he is a “danger to the security of the area.”

Diab, 32, was seized by occupation forces on July 14; he was previously held under administrative detention and conducted a 77-day strike with fellow detainee Thaer Halahleh in 2012 to win his release. He conducted a 20-day hunger strike when he was seized by occupation forces in July.

He announced his hunger strike with a statement: “My dignity is more precious than my life. I reject the unjust policy of administrative detention and walk in the footsteps of all those who struggle, all lovers of freedom, all those who crave justice, and all those who dream of a free and just state on the historic land of Palestine with its capital al-Quds,” he said. “I declare to our people and its active forces, to the people of our nation and the free people of the world and humanity, that I will fight this battle of will, of the open hunger strike. I hope for your support and solidarity until victory or martyrdom.”

Diab joins fellow prisoner Hassan Shokeh, 29, from Bethlehem, who is on hunger strike for the eighth day against his administrative detention without charge or trial. Released from Israeli occupation prisons on August 31, he was re-arrested only one month later and ordered to six months in administrative detention by the Ofer military court.

Shokeh and Diab are now being held in isolation in retaliation for their hunger strikes. They are among over 450 Palestinians jailed without trial under administrative detention orders. These orders are issued for one to six months at a time and are indefinitely renewable; many Palestinians have been jailed for years without charge or trial under so-called “secret evidence” with Israeli administrative detention orders (samidoun.net/2017/10/two-palestinian-prisoners-on-hunger-strike-against-administrative-detention-bilal-diab-and-hassan-shokeh).

Stand with Diab and Shokeh to demand that Israel release them, 463 other “administrative detainees” and all 6,279 Palestinian political prisoners (addameer.org/statistics), and that Hewlett Packard companies end their contracts with Israeli prisons and detention centers, occupation and security forces, and checkpoints and settlements (investigate.afsc.org/company/hp-incinvestigate.afsc.org/company/hewlett-packard-enterprise,investigate.afsc.org/company/dxc-technology-company).

Help build a growing international campaign to boycott HP (bdsmovement.net/boycott-hp) over the companies’ support for Israeli crimes.

Support the Palestinian people, the Palestinian prisoners, the Palestinian Resistance, and the liberation of Palestine, from the river to the sea.

Italian protest urges cancellation of Giro d’Italia race to end support of apartheid and colonization

Samidoun is republishing the following event report from Fronte Palestina Milan:

On Saturday 14th Oct 2017, Fronte Palestina Milan and BDS organized a protest outside the Museo del Ciclismo del Ghisallo (Ghisallo Cycling Museum closed to Como Lake) in occasion of the unveiling of the busts dedicated to the renowned italian cyclists Gino Bartali and Fiorenzo Magni.

The organizers of the Giro d’Italia have decided to hold the first three stages of the 2018 race in Jerusalem. This will be the first time that this event will take place outside Europe.

This is a clear project to exploit this sports event to legitimize the Zionist entity’s illegal occupation of East Jerusalem despite the UN 181 Resolution and subsequent international law and UN resolutions which show that all actions undertaken by the occupier in Jerusalem are illegal.

It was for this reason that we, Fronte Palestina Milan in collaboration with Coordinamento Lombardo di Solidarietà per la Palestina, held a demonstration in Ghisallo (Como Lake) where we raised the Palestinian Flag, erected posters and distributed leaflets asking people to boycott this sports event and the Zionist regime in Palestine, if the decision to held these three stages in Jerusalem is not cancelled.

Every day, the Israeli occupation and global imperialism practice political, cultural and social terror against the prisoners of the Palestinian and Arab resistance in order to break the liberation struggle. We organize this event on the basis of our commitment to liberating the prisoners and supporting their just cause.

On Wednesday, 25 October, Samidoun Network in Occupied Palestine will organize several activities – from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, a seminar on the struggle of the prisoners of freedom, with a presentation by Dr. Abdel-Rahim Sheikh, the brother of Samir Abu Naameh and relatives of the imprisoned internationalist struggler Georges Abdallah.

At 1:00 pm, there will be a sit-in in solidarity with the prisoners. During the day, a group of youth will create murals to support the prisoners. Together, we will stand with the prisoners against the forces of colonialism.

October 24, 2017 marks the 33rd anniversary of the arrest of Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, revolutionary Lebanese Arab Communist struggler for Palestine, by French police. Since 1984, he has remained behind bars, one of the longest-held political prisoners in the world. From October 14-24, 2017, Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network joins organizations in France and around the world to call for a week of international actions to demand freedom for Georges Ibrahim Abdallah and all Palestinian prisoners!

Georges Abdallah has been committed throughout his life to the revolutionary struggle in Lebanon and the liberation of Palestine. He was involved with the Palestinian leftist organization, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, resisting Israeli attacks on Lebanon. Later, he joined other Lebanese revolutionary leftists in the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions, pointing to a non-sectarian, socialist and revolutionary path to liberation for the people of Lebanon, faced with civil war militias and Israeli invasion and occupation in the south of Lebanon.

Georges Abdallah was originally arrested for allegedly carrying false documents; his detention was repeatedly extended as French intelligence searched for information to charge him with involvement in armed actions that killed a U.S. diplomat and an Israeli representative in Paris. Even one of his lawyers was reportedly involved in spying on Abdallah for the French intelligence agency. While he was supposed to be exchanged with prisoners held by Arab revolutionaries, the French state reneged after obtaining their own prisoners, keeping Abdallah as a prisoner (samidoun.net/2017/09/call-to-action-14-24-october-free-georges-abdallah-and-all-palestinian-prisoners).

Meanwhile the administrative detention order against French-Palestinian lawyer Salah Hamouri, ordering him imprisoned without charge or trial for six months, was confirmed on Sunday, September 17. The confirmation of the order for his imprisonment without charge or trial came after a roller coaster of charges and sentences following his seizure by Israeli occupation forces on August 23 in a pre-dawn raid on his home in Kufr Aqab near Jerusalem.

Occupation forces arrested Hamouri, a field researcher for Addameer Prisoner Support & Human Rights Association, on August 23 and shortly thereafter, far-right Israeli defense minister Avigdor Lieberman ordered him detained without charge or trial, as protests grew in France to demand the French government pressure the Israeli state to release Hamouri immediately (samidoun.net/2017/09/six-month-administrative-detention-order-reimposed-on-salah-hamouri).

Demand France fulfill its obligations to free Abdallah and secure the release of Hamouri.

Support the Palestinian people, the Palestinian prisoners, the Palestinian Resistance, and the liberation of Palestine, from the river to the sea.

22 October, Beirut: Lebanon demands the release of Georges Abdallah from French prisons

After 10 requests for release – all blocked – it is clear that Georges Abdallah is detained for reasons of retaliation rather than for judicial reasons. We do not trust the independence of the French judiciary and our nation should not trust it. Lebanese diplomacy must move to correct this mistake immediately and obtain unconditional release of the prisoner Georges Abdallah!

This event comes amid a march in Lannemezan outside the prison of Georges Abdallah in France, and alongside events in several countries, including Belgium, Greece, Tunisia and others, to confirm that the continuing imprisonment of Georges Abdallah is a shame for French authorities. We will not rest until he returns to Beirut!
